Jup Nov 19th SEB outbreak in reasonable seeing

Hi All,

Imaged the SEB outbreak in reasonable seeing, there was some light cloud wafting through but otherwise it was a good night, although not as good as the previous night.

Thanks for looking.
Regards
Trevor

Not quite as crisp, but there is still some nice detail, and it sure does a lot of rotation in under an hour.

That is beautiful Trevor. The SEB disturbance seems to be developing some colour?

Nice work Trevor. I tried for the site last night but the seeing died completely before it came into view.

Thanks David, I think the main consideration with this SEB revival is to record the changing morphology as often as possible to contribute to the record of the event, more so than worry about the quality of the images. With the quantum leap in CCD quality and processing software availability, this will be the most extensively covered SEB revival in history which will be very significant for Planetary Science.

Thanks Clive, yes, Jupiter is 11 times Earths dia and rotates on its axis in just under 10 hrs, a very fast rotation rate indeed and no doubt responsible for the winds at the equator approaching the speed of sound.

Thanks Ray, there has been some subtle colour in the SEB for some time, many different imagers that contribute data to the BAA have noted it and John Rogers ( director of the BAA Jupiter section) has spoken about it in one of his BAA reports previously. It will be of great interest to follow this outbreak and see how the morphology changes, not only in structure, but also with the colour.

Thanks Paul, it has been very interesting over the last week as the Jet has become very favorable but the passage of the High pressure systems has often meant that at lower alt the local wind has been at 90 degrees or even 180 degrees to the direction of the hi alt winds. I think when it is like that there must, at some point, be turbulence at the intersection of the boundary layers between the upper and lower systems.

On Thursday night I had very good seeing and there was a fair bit of wind around locally but it was blowing in the same direction as the charts showed the hi alt winds to be going. I think there is something to gleaned from that.

I'm glad you've been getting the clear skies to be able to record the event Trevor. Amazing images, as usual. thanks for sharing them with us.

I totally agree with that.

Really nice work, Trevor

Cheers.

The real question though, is not the actual morphology; but what is the cause of the SEB doing this. The NEB does not appear to do this. Why this happens may never be answered. Watching the event is one thing but understand the route cause is another.

BTW the event in 2007 was well imaged too. Most of us Aussies have data from that time.

Paul, important clues to the the reason for the SEB revival may lay in an indepth analysis of the changing morphology of the event at various wavelengths. Sort of cause and effect.

Amateurs gathering this data may not have the background for such an indepth analysis of what this all means, however there are many Planetary Physicists that do and the data provided to them by amateurs plays a vital role in their research.

Not sure if you saw John Rogers message from Nov 11th, I have include a quote from him below.

"Observers should monitor all aspects of the spreading disturbances, but also monitor other longitudes, as a secondary source might also appear. Observers have the chance to make this the best-observed SEB Revival ever. "

Regards
Trevor
