ITN: Most Distant Galaxy Measured

In the News:

Clearing the cosmic fog: The most distant galaxy ever measured (w/ Video)

Quote:
After two months of very careful analysis and testing of their results, the team found that they had clearly detected the very faint glow from hydrogen at a redshift of 8.6, which makes this galaxy the most distant object ever confirmed by spectroscopy. A redshift of 8.6 corresponds to a galaxy seen just 600 million years after the Big Bang.
The timeframe corresponding to redshift 8.6 is known as the 'era of re-ionisation' and they had to disassociate the image from hydrogen fog. A very faint image.

… Also a new record for spectroscopy !! Interesting 'zoom-in' video, also.

Cheers

Craig

Loved the video. Well I only got to look at the first bit so far but that zoom in through all of the younger bits of universe before we finally get to see the galaxy is really cool. Gives you the impression of digging back through time as all of the other objects disappear behind you.

Good one

Stuart

Dr J drives me nuts, though.
They always present the Science in these videos interlaced with a heavy plugs for ESO. Sometimes puts me off the real topic.
