anyone know about those portable air con units?

Thinking about getting one for our spare bedroom. Gets quite hot there in the afternoon sun. Don't want to put in a wall mounted unit.

I've heard they're not worth it, not very powerful? Thoughts? Good brands? Brands to avoid? Power ratings? Where to get bargains?

(Never looked into air con units before)

I've owned a couple different portable air conditioners.

Mostly they are OK but they don't really work well in large open rooms and when the temperature goes over roughly 35 degrees.

The real down side is that they tend to be noisy. You'll hear it's on when it's on!

Thanks. Word I just got from a mate that used to sell white goods was along those lines too. He mentioned that you really need to get rid of the hot air out the window too, which could be a problem and might as well get a proper 1-1.5kW unit. I'll look into that.

Mine had a pipe that directed hot air out through the window. Wasn't too powerful - especially with direct afternoon sun shining onto the wall of the bedroom where I was trying to sleep after night shift. I got used to noise. You can get ones with a separate compressor that sits outside and a pipe comes back thru the window - but they were very expensive.
