Which one are you?

A study of more than 36,000 people from around the world concluded that musical tastes and personality type were closely related.

The research, which was carried out by Professor Adrian North of Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh in the UK suggested classical music fans were shy, while heavy metal fans were gentle and at ease with themselves.

Fans of Indie music had low self-esteem and were not hard working, fans of Rap music had high self-esteem and were outgoing. Country & Western fans were hardworking and outgoing, Reggae fans were creative but not hardworking, and fans of chart pop had high self-esteem, were not creative, but where hardworking and outgoing.

So which one are you?

I had a look at the site but can't find the article - I must be thick.

Anyway, I can see a few issues. As Susy said, what if you like many genres but not necessarily everything from any particular genre? What if your tastes have changed over the years? Is that a fundamental change of personality or just maturing and being exposed to different types of music? What if your too old to have ever 'got' rap? What if you can appreciate some metal but find the energy too confronting at your age? What if you once heard a good C&W song?

It looks like there are so many variables one wonders how they could tease out any meaning.

And, of course the big one. What if you luv, luv, luv jazz and it isn't even mentioned??? (Ditto for prog, ambient, world and unclassified)

What if you are no longer interested in music? Some people "grow out of it" with time.

" World Music "

Oh, man, how I dislike that 'term'!!

It's one term I've always found so demeaning, elitist, and patronising as there are more categories to 'world music' than in the English speaking countries many times over.

So, 'world music' must make me a ranter. How about that! Hmmm, must be something to that article!

I agree it's a poor term but nothing better came to mind. I know some 'world' is nothing but western rock with the odd 'ethnic' instrument thrown in but there is stuff that really is a merging of traditions. Bands like Afro-Celt Sound System, New Trolls and After Crying come to mind.
