Sydney south viewing spots.

Hi people, I was playing in my 45B soccer match at the Woronora Heights field late yesterday afternoon. While having a few conciliatory beers with my team mates after the match (guess who lost), it became dark and I suddenly realised what a great observation spot this was. High on a hill with no obstruction to the horizon in any direction, plus a nice flat cricket pitch in the middle for setting up on. Ofcourse there would be some light pollution from the houses & street lights but living in the suburbs, you learn to live with this. Anyway I was just wondering if any of the members who live out my way have try viewing from this spot, and if so was it alright?

Hi Clarry,

Sorry to hear about your soccer match. The other mob probably cheated, eh!

I haven't been to the spot you mentioned at Woronora, however, a few of us set up at the oval of Randwick Girls' High where there is nothing BUT light pollution, plus an intersection coincides with where we set up, but only occasional cars bother us.

If you have car access onto the oval, or atleast access wide enough to comfortably pass through with a large scope, it sounds like a good site to get together on. Would be a very good spot.

Hi everyone,

Sorry for bringing this old topic up, but I have recently moved to Maroubra South and was wondering if there were any decent & trouble-free spots in South Sydney in say a 10-20min driving radius?

The place I live in has a super tiny backyard, and the access to the sky is too limited by neighbouring homes & trees, so I need to find somewhere else to observe from. I'm trying to find somewhere around where I won't be bothered by unwelcome guests and where the portion of sky accessible will be decent with decent levels of light pollution ( = I'd like to avoid direct street lights). The closer, the better even with moderated light pollution around or limited sky access. There's a sports field around the corner but I'm not too sure I'd like to hang out there by myself in the middle of the night with my gear...

Any help/comment welcome

Cheers

Anyone has some other suggestions? Fellow sydneysiders, where do you observe from (in the Sydney area)?!

There is a do tonight (Tuesday 10'th) at Randwick Girls' High School. Have a look in the Star Parties forum for details.

I too live in Maroubra. Most of my observing is from my backyard, the girls' school & at Katoomba Airfield most New Moon weekends. Sessions at the school and Katoomba are usually listed in the Star Parties forum. The school sessions can be very short notice sometimes.

Alone, in a dark park, with expensive gear- not a good idea. Even with a mate. If you would like details of when I'll be at a session, school, home, other, drop me a PM.

Mental.
