Rather stupidly I removed the Lens and cleaned it with distilled water, rubbed it dry and now have marks on it. What do I do? do I need to buy a new one and what would it likely cost? Can a new one be fitted by simply screwing it in?
Hi Peter
before buying a new one, I'd try cleaning it again with a Photographic lens (or get something from a telescope shop) cleaning solution as if you were careful I doubt you damaged the coating with distilled water......but wait for a more experienced reply befor doing this
the distilled h20 would be fine but what did you rub it with?? apparently the uhtc is one of the less hardy coatings -the rubbing may have scratched the coating...can you see is it just a liquid wipe mark or is the actual coating been scratched?
usually you cannot just fit a new one, meade would make you send to authorised dealer
Well I think first of all dont do it! but when is distilled water distilled?? most of the marks were caused by water drops that had dried.
Very careful re wetting and then thoroughly drying gently with cotton buds has given a satisfactory result
Peter distilled water is just that, it still has ions in it. You need to use de-ionised water if no marks are to be left. The UHTC are as tough as nails and I have never managed to scratch one in many years of ownership. It is very unlikely that you have done any real damage unless you cleaned it with steel wool or something similar. It takes a lot of dust to really affect the image so it really is not necessary to clean very often.
if it s just dried water droplets I've often used my breath, followed by a soft polish with a good quality lens cloth..pleasing to hear its nothing more serious
