Solar eruption - when will the shock wave arrive?

This must have happened quite a few hours ago now: http://www.news.com.au/technology/so...-1225900789727

I wonder when the ejected gas cloud reaches Earth?

Cheers
Steffen.

Just hope that no one had an open wormhole connection to another gate at that moment. (SG1 anyone?).

Coronal mass ejection

The Earth is in the path to be hit by a wave of violent space weather after a massive explosion on the sun.
Earth orbiting satellites detected a C3-class solar flare a few days ago and the origin of the blast was Earth-facing sunspot 1092...
Spectacular auroral displays are expected on the evenings of August 3 and August 4 in the northern US and other countries should look toward the north for the rippling dancing "curtains" of green and red light.

That's a pretty speccy clip! When you realise how big that filament is compared to the earth and it just gets blown off! Wow!

I captured an image of the sun just a few hours earlier that day...

Tony I did ( well I'm 98% sure). Here in Perth about 4(? maybe more) years ago. Laying back on a deckchair in my girlfriends backyard. Just looking up and saw odd reddish colours in the sky. they were shimmering like pics and vids I had seen before of Aurora. Then slight colour changes happend and I knew it was the Southern lights!

An Interesting thing I also saw was that the Foxtel dish on her roof seemed to glow red ( I think at the receiver(?)) Foxtel and the TV wasn't on. I thought/think it might have had something to do with the Aurora. Never investigated that......might do it now!

In 2003 there were 3 nights I saw Aurora in Perth and once in the country.. I only photographed them on two nights .. perhaps this is the time you were thinking of? Here's my pics of it.. http://www.rogergroom.com/items/AuroraAustralis_80

I think the dish you were watching would have just been reflecting the light

Ever since I've been keeping a very sharp eye out for more. I spent a little time outside last night watching but quickly gave up after keeping a close eye on reports from further south and determining it wasn't worth the time outside.

yep Roger that must have been the same time!
I was in the Eastern burbs ( Midlan/Swan View). The lights I saw were to the south / south east/ . Similar to the colours you have captured!

Fantastic pic's Roger. I remember quite clearly when i saw it i was about 20yo. Haven't seen any since. I think it would be good for me to keep a close eye out too.
