Bolide over Sydney?

I was just driving back from the airport, having dropped my son off, and at approximately 8:33 PM, when I was on King Georges Road near Roselands, I believe I saw a bolide

My wife who was in the front passenger seat also saw it so it wasn't a figment of my imagination

it flashed really bright green -and remember I was seeing this through the windscreen of my car driving through a very well lit road

now usually you can never see a meteor from Sydney even the 'burbs-to see something from the sort of location I did-boy that must have been mag -15 or something

anyone else notice anything? isn't much of a night for looking up anyway because of cloud so possibly no one did

Narayan

How exciting!

I remember my first (15 years ago) and only real big bolide like it was yesterday. It was big and green and seemed to be about the size of a tennis ball 2 metres away.

Anyway its rain and cloud here.. cold too..

Hi Narayan,

Lucky sighting!

A few years ago we spotted an incredibly bright one at 4pm in broad daylight at Galston
on the outskirts of Sydney on the way back from SPSP. So I have no trouble
believing you will see one in the most light polluted of locations at night.

Wow, Gary. Can you describe what you saw in daylight? I can't begin to imagine what it would look like.

Nice one, Narayan!

You lucky man. I have often wanted to see a super bright meteorite. Considering how often I have been out in the night sky it is as you say a rare event. I have not seen one. I have seen thousands of small meteorites.

I did see one at my house about 2 months ago that went slow and looked very bright for a few secs like a firework that was falling slowly. unusual. It must have been coming in at an angle towards me.

Greg.

OK, I'm a pedant for saying this but last century was <10 years ago. There are kids who can't shave who remember last century.

I don't know why, but the couple of bright ones I've seen have also moved slowly. One was so slow that we had time to exchange a few words while it traveled about 45* across the sky. That one was perhaps mag -5 and so would not be visible in daylight.

Ah yes of course, I remember that one too Gary.
Remember we had a thread on here discussing it.
I was driving back from SPSP with my family and happened to see it as well.

Amazing to see one in broad daylight.

Have seen one in daylight too, was about 20 years ago though so memory is scratchy.
My brother a friend and I were in a car and the friend spotted it, pointed it out to us and we watched it move parallel to the horizon from NW to NE, maybe 30deg up, just above the rooftops of the houses along the road we were driving along. After a short time it split in two and faded away. Was maybe 5:30 or 6pm(we were heading home from fish&chip shop), but was summer so Sun was still up.
Ofcourse we were in a car that was moving, so I couldn't tell how fast it was moving.

Guess I can count myself in the lucky category also. Saw one about 15yrs ago.

About 4pm one nice sunny afternoon in Sydney, I was getting out of my car to grab some cash at an ATM & being an appreciater of the sky etc took a lucky glance high into the sky, maybe 60degrees high and caught a bright meteor streaking across the sky.

It was glowing with a greeny tinge & had what looked like a vapour trail following it and was moving fairly slowly compared to say a leonid. I'd say I watched it for 3 or 4 seconds or so before it faded out. The trail remained for maybe another 10 seconds while I just stared, before picking my jaw off the ground.

I carried on to the ATM etc & on my way back to the car, a couple walked past me & I caught the tail end of a conversation with the girl trying to convince a guy she saw something in the sky & hes like yeah yeah bulls%#t. I told them I saw it as well & that it was a meteor etc, we had a quick chat about what we saw & they trodded off.

Amazing sight.

Amazing to see one in broad daylight.

Hi Andrew,

That's right! It really was something else. Here is a post where I mention it -
http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...49&postcount=8

I have no doubt, as I had written, that if it had come over Sydney at night, that
it would have lit up the city like it were daytime.

H was asking what it was like. What struck me at the time was how
intensely bright it was - a brilliant white glow with the brightness of an arc welding
light - and that its path was relatively horizontal and that it seemed very low.
It was a real WOW! moment.

I've been lucky to see quite a few over the years. At one of the best Leonid Showers
in the past few years, we had driven to Narrabri to find some of the only clear
skies in the state and there was one we witnessed just on sunrise that left
a smoke trail that persisted to hang there in the sky for about half an hour.
The memory of that has persisted much, much longer and the five of us that
witnessed it still talk about it to this day when we get onto the topic of bright
meteors.

Best Regards

Gary
