IR filter removal

Hi. I asked the same question in the equipment forum. Just in case I should be asking it here. Has anyone any practical experience with DSLR IR filter removal. It looks like it's easy to do irreparable damage. Recommendations?

Also try Peter Tan (Hong Kong)...

He did my 40D - great service and cheaper than I could find at the time in Oz.

Don't know which Canon model you own, but here's a blow-by-blow of how to do a DIY 40D modification...

Thanks Doug.

I must admit to being a bit confused about the merits of using either the Baader replacement filter or just removing the factory filter altogether. Is there much difference when photographing nebula?

If you don't replace the filter with a Baader or equivalent UV/IR blocking filter, you will be picking up all spectrums of light. This will mean that your stars will tend to bloat due to IR.

And, unless you're into daytime terrestrial infrared imaging, the camera will be pretty much rendered useless as far as using it during daylight hours. With the UV/IR blocking filter in place, the camera can still be used as a terrestrial imaging device.

Thanks Guy's. Appreciate the technical feedback. I've just remembered that leaving the filter out renders the auto-focus unusable. I'm happy to get it done now.

My 40d is a complete removal, and is used for UV/IR daytime photography, for astro i utilise a astronomik UV IR filter, and i think its a bit more sensitive than with the baader filter in place because i tend to pick up faint dark nebula all the time with it, not that others with modded 40d's don't pick them too, but yeah? don't know but they are always there.

Thanks again guys! I did read about the sensitivity of the Baader filter. I just need to decide whether to ditch the auto-focus or not, and whether I'm game to try the conversion myself.
