Broadband Service

I am looking for a new broadband/phone provider...Have used Telstra and Optus in the past...while I can't fault their service...their prices are getting a little steep for 2 phones and a Broadband connection...Can anyone suggest alternatives?

Rob,
I'm with Optus. I get 30GB (10+20 o.p.) data plus 2 mobile phones plus land line for ~$100 per month. Have you contacted them and discussed your needs. I have been using Optus for many years and have no problems with them.

I recently change to IINET, (was with Bigpond), currently no contract $89.00 for 40G total 20 peak and 20 non peak. Although I upgraded recently to 60G total for $99.00 still no contract. only $39.00 connection too.

I get consistant data throughput making my IP phone calls very stable.

They do have more maintenance times than some other but they are highly informative without the need to phone them all the time. Finally they are the only one that will call back to save you staying queued waiting for an answer (more knowledgable then Telstra too) Telstra Bigpiond answer quickly but do not know what they are talking about (follow scripts).

Funny enough we had a Telstra rep knock on our door yesterday and spoke to my wife. He said that they were laying new cables in our street soon & were offering unlimited broadband, unlimited national phone calls & every Foxtel channel for $170 per month. On top of this they are offering $200 cash back to buy your way out of any existing plans you my be signed up in. My current plan with Optus is $130 per month which includes unlimited phone & 20gb broadband so it's tempting. I like the unlimited broadband however I don't watch a lot of TV.

I'd recommend iiNet. Their prices have always been better than Telstra's for what I have compared.

I find their wait times for support can be long but have always solved the problems I've had.

I will back up Roger and Malcom and say that my experience with IInet has been exemplary!
Great prices and the waiting time for support is minimal compared to hours spent with Telstra. Also I believe their off hours support is from South Africa (and NZ??), which is a breath of fresh air compared to some Indian call centers ( No disrespect!).
My ADSL speeds are great ( around 18Mbps on Speedtest.net - 1km from exchange)
They also have lots of unmetered content in their freezone.

One other thing if you live close to an exchange I advise IINET businesss broadband ASDL2+ Annex M.

I had this when I had a shop in Bassendean was cable distance of 600M. My upload speed was 2.4MB and download speed of 18MB.

IINET are one of few ISP that do not count uploads in their data plan where as OPTUS and BIGPOND do. As a general rulle there is approx 25% more data on average not counted with IINET. I use a lot of Video telephony so upload speed and data count enormously. Uploading of images also play an important role. These operation can add another 25% to the data count if used a lot.

Be careful of these unlimited plans, they have a fair use policy attached, and they can charge you extra if they think it is not fair use. Saw and episod on the news where a person copped $1000.00 extra for one month as they implemented this so called policy.

I found IInet pretty good service wise in the few years I did buisness with them .. but as a long term customer of one of there aquisitions
found it a little rich they trimmed back a premium (contracted) service
with very vague info regarding the changes in both provisions of the service I agreed to and the change in company ownership .

I can't say there was anything unlawfull about the way they ran this through (read the fine print) , but they could of definately tried to better comunicate with there customers .

I find that all ISP's do this no matter what, I also used IINET for a period of 6 years or more (can't remember exactly) and in that time they have grown but things have happened that are what I would deem normal for the industry. But being with OPTUS for a sinle year and Bigpong for nearly 2 years their actions are far worse.

I was foortunate enough to move to IINET thanks to the seperation of the wholesale and retail wing of Telstra. This has been the most momentus occasion for me as while they were together I was stuck with a far inferior service in my RIM location.

The only disadvantage with moving to IINET is that I can't get free monthly access I obtained from Telstra because they would do stupid things to my connection that would require me to contact TIO.

So in comparison they still win out.

I've been with Westnet for over 6 years (I believe they are now affiliated with iinet) both here in WA and in NSW and found them to give great service at a reasonable cost. Their help desk is good too, contact with someone who knows the system in a very short time on the very few occasions I've called them. Presently using the Caravan Park wireles sytem with a Telstra dongle as a backup when it goes down occasionally. In the process of having a landline installed to the site so it'll be back to Westnet for me.
