M83

Hi All

I haven't been doing any astro imaging for quite a while ... too much smoke around with all the farmers burning off when I felt like it and then too slack at other times

Anyway, I got myself out to the obs last night for a few hours and imaged m83 for an hour before I could smell the ominous odour of distant grass fire. I'm sure there would have been a fair bit of smoke in the atmosphere anyway from earlier but I was determined to get out.

So here is last nights effort.

WO FLT 110 Triplet
SBIG ST2000XCM
EQ6 self guided with CCDOPs
stacked in DSS - final processing PS CS3

Your stars look nice and round to me, but I there is inconsistency in the colour through the arms of the galaxy - I was wondering if this was a problem of misaligned RBG frames, but then I see you are using a OSC camera. What does the original file look like - is this a problem of compressing the file too much to fit within the 200Kb limit for IIS?

This is the way it came out David ... I did say that there was smoke in the atmosphere ... it would have effected the colour somewhat ... although colour is always subjective. The original of any astro image looks a lot different to the finished pic ... but I didn't mess with this much at all really and I'm very rarely completely satisfied with any image.

Thanks for looking and commenting

Nice image Steve, Bummer about the smoke. It makes it hard to get a sharp image.

It's not just CALM Trevor it's the farmers burning off ready to seed their crops when the rain hits I daily see smoke plumes to the East of my home deeper into the wheatbelt ... nothing we can do about it ofcourse ... we like to eat ay !

Thanks Dave, I think the outer extensions are pretty well defined despite the poor overall image quality ... there's always another night ! We had some rain yesterday so hopefully they wil stop lighting fires soon

Good to see you back, it's been a while.
The image is nice but as you say it's hard to get good data with all this smoke around.
There was a fair bit of smoke around at my place too the last few nights.

At least you were out there enjoying the night.
I find the longer I'm away from imaging, the more I forget things and the longer it takes to get back into the swing of things.

Hope we get some clear nights again soon.
