Exclamation aluminium eyepiece case bargain

I bought a pluckable foam lined aluminium case for my eyepieces a couple of weeks ago. $70 from Jaycar.

Today I saw the same case minus foam at Bunnings for $24! Actually the Bunnings one is a little better; stronger with less flex. The jaycar one is a bit dodgy . Now, I'm not sure how much the pluckable foam is worth, but I doubt that it would be anywhere near $46.

Is it a nationwide thing or is or just your local bunnings. Sounds great, I might get three

Eh... three?

Is that one for each eyepiece then h0ughy? You have some large Naglers I suppose.... If you have valuable eyepieces you should store them securely, - say in a padded flight-data recorder box, inside a large safe on wheels.

I don't know Houghy. The cases are fitted out with removable dividers. They are in the same area as toolboxes and "organisers". They are very similar to Jaycar's $49 "Economy Aluminium Attache Case". But the Bunnings ones are definitely stronger, especially the latches. I'll be getting one too so I'll let you know what they are being sold as.

Yeh Radio Parts are good so are Rockby, not as well known as Jaycar/Docksmith/Bunnings but both can have some really good stuff.

http://www.rockby.com.au/ I think they are close to you steve.

If anyone knows where I can get some pluckable foam, i'd appreciate that. I've got 2 of those aluminium cases from BigW (same as bunnings with removable dividers), but I need some pluckable foam.

Hi Everyone, Auto One have aluminium technican's cases for $19.95. These have been reduced from $29.95, in their Christmas Catalogue.
Then a quick trip to Clark Rubber for the foam of your choice. Cheers, John

Checked them out last night and bought one from Bunnings at Artarmon $23.94.
5811652 4005187202007 box-tool w/- strap deluxe (from the docket)

Couldnt justify three, one for each eyepiece.

Also bought some folding canvas camp chairs at $8.90 including bag - bargain.

Hi people,

Thanks for inspiring me to do something I had been thinking about for about 20 years (don't rush into anything )

I brought one of these nice cases from Bunnings Villawood (they are sold as tool cases and i found them in the electrical tool department. Then it was off to a Clark rubber. They sell the same foam as the camera cases use (look for the fairly rigid black, a little expensive, ones). I only saw them in 25mm and 50mm thinkness. I used a sandwich of 3 layers 25, 50, 25. The cost was $19, custom cut in the shop (so take the box in!). These fit the case nicely with about 20mm for some reference books in the lid. After playing with it I think a 10mm top and bottom (if it is available) would have worked just as well leaving more room for more books. My eps, telrad etc seem to fit in the 50mm layer nicely (but I don't have Naglers, so be careful).
wrt to cutting the ep shapes. It is easy to do and don't worry it isn't precut (let's face it, the total cost is less than half you would pay in a camera store). The lady recommended using an electric carving knife. I found a box knife with a new blade, full extended worked well (only a few rough spots). This is the type of knife that you extend to break off a new section,NOT the traditional Stanley type.

Anyway I hope this is of help to some one.

Regards

Glenn

All the cases left at my local Bunnings were damaged, so I didn't get one in the end. They are pretty fragile, actually. That superficially tough looking all aluminium exterior is very thin and easily damaged and dented. Still, it's a lot better than putting your EPs back in their original packaging every time and storing them in an assortment of cardboard boxes. Before I got the case everything was in a horrible mess. Now they are neatly stored in the shiny foam lined case. If we're ever burgled it will be obvious which container has the valuable stuff in it. Isn't it great to help out a fellow human being?

Trouble with Clark rubber is that every store is different. My local one only had some absolutely filthy 5mm think pluckable stuff. That is typical of this store. There is a small "foam" business in Balwyn (??) and an even smaller one in Burwood (?) I might try instead...

It's commonly called camera case foam and what I used to make up Anna's case.

If anyone is interested PM me.

I picked up a case at SupaCheap a while ago and lined it with foam from Clark Rubber - just normal foam (about 30mm thick) - I just cross-hatched the foam with a sharp Stanley knife in the areas where it needed to squish easily, and cut out rectangular grooves for EP's to sit in..... the foam was very cheap - I bought enough for this, and to line my timber box that holds my 8" F6 Dob in for $12 I think......

When my house got done over, the scumbags opened my eyepiece case and left it alone. Mind you the home theatre amp, dvd player and jewellery stuff all walked out.
