Toucams first Jupiter

Hi all, as you know I have just purchased a toucam and this morning I got out nice and early and gave it the official first fun. I tried it with and without the IR filter, and this had mixed results. I only shot frames for a mx of 90 seconds and averaged around 800 (for 10 frames a second) to 1300 frames (for 15 frames a second) with very little dropping of frames.

Now for those who have not used this camera, an observation that I made was that the images on the screen present as being very grainy. This makes focus a real pain. Settings were 1/25 second, gain almost zero, saturation 90 percent, gamma 20 and unfortunately white balance was set to auto ( I now know that it should be left off for shooting).

Anyway for the results. Out of the three avis I have processed so far I got two. No editing of the frames I just set the quality level in registax at 70%. I need to pull out the frames that are blurry. I still have 6 avi's to process and will post the best of those. But for now just these two.

time to get a Toucam i think .......well done Paul, if thats your first go imagine what youll be producing once you get the hang of it.

top one is without the filter and the bottom with. Thanks for the compliment was really surprised by the level of detaill lurking in the avi.

especially as you are new to the Toucam. Can't wait to see your shots when you get all your settings where you want them!

hhhmmm, the filter makes a big difference doesn't it. Yeah its amazing what pops out at you after playing with the wavelets a little.

I know what you mean Aragorn....I noticed that shop in SA mentions a long exposure version (I assume its just SC modded before being shipped)

Hey thanks people, but remember I have spent several months fiddling with the LPI. Although I must say again the learning curve for the Toucam was made considerably easier with help from Mike and others, both on this site and CN's. And; of course processing has been made easier with the help of Anthony (Bird). So this is really a combined effort. Reasonably happy with the first lot of work.

Very very nice Paul, your astrophotography has improved in leaps and bounds (both planetary and DSO's) in teh last few months.

When you ordered your ToUcam did you get the IR filter that has the bluish tint to it or did you go for the more expensive one (the one I didn't get)?

I got the bluish tinted one Paul, not too impressed with it.

Thanks people, your comments make me want to achieve more. I am up again tonight (now 1:34) just got home and waiting for the Red spot transit. Want to get it in the meridian. And looks like there might be a moon shadow looming on the face. Transit at 230 am. So hopefully I will have something better early on Sunday.

I'm surprised that the shot with the filter showed less blue than the one without. I've been avoiding using that filter. I didn't like the tint it gave to Saturn. Maybe I'll give it a try with jupiter. Hope you were successfull with the transit.

Guys , I have the Sirius Optics NIR filter from andrews and find that it has very little blue tint if any at all to it.
Bit more expensive though at $99.00.
Definatly make a difference as CCd's can be prone to Infared bled which causes a blurring and loss of contrast to the image.
I found it particularly helpfull on Mars.
