Fireball

Hi everyone,

i just saw my first fireball. If i am correct a fireball is basically a bright meteor and looks like a flame. The fireball i saw came from the north near the zenith and went south were it diminshed near crux.It was bright yellow and then turned red (like a flame) and then vanished,it was absolutely awesome. Its a sight to remember. It happened about 7:00pm AEST.

Did anyone else see this?

If you have seen a fireball, please tell us all about the experience . its an experience i'll never forget .

Regards Orestis

Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish! How long did this event seem to take? I saw somthing more like a streak that left a smoke trail (last year). I got a real buz out of that. The one I saw seemed a lot slower than your average commet and caught my eye so much so with it's bright yellowish tail, that it seemed like slow motion. I also like the way the Smoke trail disapated after the event leaving it's mark as quick as it came and went.

I hope we both get to see more..."DID YOU SEE THAT!!!!!"

YES I SAW THAT!!!!!!

i hope we get to see more too.I've been into astronomy for about 2 years now and thats my first one.

Can't wait to see another.Regarding time it probally only lasted 2 seconds at most it was moving pretty fast.
I didn't see a smoke trail but i think i might have heard a faint whizz sound, which was quite interesting.i think you can only see the smoke trail when its somehow illuminated by the sun or is still sort of burning,eh i don't now.About what time did you see yours last year and was yours part of a meteor Shower? i don't think mine was.For all i know it could of been a piece of space junk burning up.though i do prefer the thought of seeing a piece of rock billions of years old burning upin our atmosphere.

I didn't see that one but I did see one similar about 4 weeks ago.
The one I saw looked a bit like a firework rocket and it was kind of slow and floating but very bright. It was coming more straight down (lucky it burnt up eh?). It was also fairly early evening about 6:30pm or so.

I have spent many hours under dark skies and that was the first one I have seen. At my dark site it is usual to see about 10 -15 meteors a night. Some are amazingly fast, some seem to float down, some are short and brighter and some are not as bright and much longer. They vary a lot.

One of the nicest was near dawn when I stopped to admire the moon crescent and the lovely sky colours forming and right on cue a beautiful meteorite blazed just near the moon - lovely! Like a movie scene.

Greg.

Have seen some very bright meteors, that were amazing!!
Only 1 I would classify as a fireball, was about 10 years ago. It was dusk so still fairly light, and I saw and HEARD it as it came across, low in the sky. May have even landed, it was amazing. Not as many colours as still lightish, but the boom sound will be something I remember forever!!

Orestis, it was around the time of Leon-somthing passed over, actually just on the tail end of that passing. It would of been in between 1:30 & 2:30 am.
As for the smoke trail...I'm sure it was there, because other than the streak of yellow and slower than normal decent, the wavering smoke trail was what I remember most, like a squigly line behind it. It's angle was fairly steep and I was facing towards town from my dark site several mms away. Perhaps the reflection from town brought it out. Given the smoke and all I thought it was fairly close.
"SOUND" hey...lol... You win on that score I'd love to see one hit...from a safe enough distance of course.
Goto go....later

Romantic fireball

Well I live along the mornington Peninsula and I can remember the nite quite clearly. We had borrowed a 8" dob from the astroclub and it was the first time we saw Saturn. My wife and kids were thrilled, so we moved the dob into the back yard to escape the light pollution from the street light. My wife and I looked up towards the Sw and saw this massive meteriod spread across the sky, I reckon 30 to 40 degrees in length. The hues were green fading into red into a bright yellow. My wife kissed me on the cheek and we both felt the amazement of the occassion.
