The Streams of NGC1097

This image was taken from my observatory in Moorook, AU. There are interesting optical "jets" or "streams" that some believe are from a recent galaxy merger. They are very faint and make this Seyfert type Galaxy pretty interesting.

http://www.imagingdeepsky.com/Galaxi...97/NGC1097.htm

If you would like to read more about the jets ; http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2003ApJ...585..281H

Thanks for taking the time to look,

Kindest Regards,

Ken Crawford

Wow, Ken, a great photo. Thank you also for the link to science about the phenomenon. Such huge structures. Scarcely seems possible.

Regards,
Tony Barry

Great work Ken, you have captured Jets 1,2 and 4,
I am surprised that #3 is not visible seeing as you have gone so deep.
The Arp Atlas shows 4 but only in a drawing,
Cheers

Absolute stunner Ken. I love the processing in this - I have learnt so much from what you have written on your site. Many thanks and again a great photo

Absolutely amazing image, Ken. Beautifully processed and those jets are really extraordinary. Thanks for posting.

It does seem strange for us to see someone in California posting images taken remotely in South Australia. ...not sure it's entirely politically correct to refer to Moorook as "outback desert" on your website. It is on one of Australia's largest rivers (which admittedly is running a bit thin atm) and the locals might take offense. Mind you, there are vast areas of South Australia that are unquestionably outback desert, but probably not the riverland.

Thanks so much for the kind words, I was only able to get hints of the 4th jet as it is very faint but it is buried in the noise and I could not dig it out. I had some issues with my flats and they are most important when you go after very faint structures.

The text about Moorook was taken from the Riverland Dingo Observatory page here written by Brad Moore http://www.riverdingo.net.au/welcome.htm so I have to plead ignorance

I have only looked at the site with google and have not been there before so thank you for the information as I would not want to offend any potential friends.

Regards,

Ken Crawford
