AN Az timing pulley

I wanted to remove the Argo Navis AZ Timing pulley so I can investigate and find a soultion to my AZ stictation problem..

But.... this feels so silly saying it, but I cant remove the timing pulley..

Ive taken the washer and bolt of the top, and my assumption is to then scew the timing pulley off the bolt? But It doesnt nudge when i try and screw it off, Unless im ment to use a reasonable amount of force?..

Gary,anyone please...

Yup,

I've been here before. I found that I had somehow bent my azimuth bolt, eg the grub screw was removed and nothing appeared to be holding it in, apart from the bend in the bolt.
Unfortunately my methods of firstly precision removal followed by exclaiming "YOU DON"T WANT TO MAKE ME ANGRY" then turning green and breaking everything is defiantly NOT advised.
I ended up having to buy a new timing pulley and if I ever want Argo on my old 10inch sky watcher, I will have to buy a new azimuth bolt for that too.

I doubt that Gary from Argo Navis will miss this post with a way ahead for you.

Cheers,

Trent

Got a close up pic of the pulley/shaft?
It's not a circlip holding it on is it?

Hey Steve,

The system uses a 10mm ball thrust bearing that goes over the bolt once it has protruded the bottom and top base. The pulley then sits on top of the ball thrust bearing.

Camera battery has died so will try and post some close up pics tommorow.

It feels as if the pulley has become "stuck" onto the threads of the protruding screw bolt..

It doesnt appear to be bent in anyway to what Trent had experienced. But I am close to turning green with frustration But dont want to break it just yet.. not untill I get some expert advise (that's you guys).

Hi Ash,

Thanks for the post.

Don't forget that generally the fastest way to get support is to either email
sales@wildcard-innovations.com.au or phone us in Sydney
during business hours on 02 9457 9049 Though
I try to watch out for forum posts from customers seeking assistance,
I don't necessarily look at all the forums every day.

Also don't forget that the assembly instructions that came with your kit
can also be found online at the Wildcard Innovations web site.

Specifically with regard your Az timing pulley, it is held in place by two fasteners.
Firstly, you have correctly removed the 1/4" nut and washer from above the pulley.
Next you need to get down and examine the hub of the pulley where you will
find a socket head set-screw which is fastening it to the Az pivot bolt. Since the
set screw is black, you need good light. Rotate the mount around in Az whilst you watch
through the opening in the rocker for it to come into view. The kit then came
with a 1/16" hex key that fits the socket head set screw. Get the hex key in the
gap between the base of the rocker and the pulley and you will need to perform
a succession of quarter turns to unfasten it enough. You only need to back it out
a little and you can keep it captive in the hub of the pulley.

The pulley can then be removed from the Az pivot bolt. Just grasp the pulley and
either pull it up or if you twist it as if you were unscrewing something and
pull it up at the same time, it will come free. This will then reveal the thrust bearing
that was supplied with the kit.

When you re-assemble the pulley, take note that the Az bolt has a 'flat'
on it which the set screw is designed to be fastened on.

Should you require assistance, please don't hesitate to drop me a line.

With regards improving the movement of these style of mounts in Az,
you might want to consider adding a bronze bush. Find one with a 10mm I.D.
and then re-drill the hole through the base of the rocker to a diameter suitable
for the bush's O.D.

Best Regards
