CCD camera Good? Bad? What?

OzScope is selling a SkyWatcher CCD Imager for $199A and I was considering buying it as it is difficult to find an Old TouCam and the other options are expensive, or require modification. Which to tell the truth I am not capable of doing. I tried with a QCPro 9000 and simple stuffed the cam up. So is this a good option? Has anyone bought one and can you fill me in on it's abilities etc. Thanks for your time. StevenA

For well under $199 you can buy a philips spc900nc web cam. The only mod you need to make is to remove the lens. Too easy!
It really is a very good camera. Once the weather has cleared, I'll be using mine for lunar and planetary imaging as well as for performing my drift align.

I had a look at the specs on the SkyWatcher model, and it is 640x480, sensitivity 3 lux. You're unlikely to be happy with performance like that on anything other than the moon. As a comparison, the SPC900NC is 1280x1024, sensitivity <1lux, if you can get your hands on one.

Regards,
Eric

Philips SPC 900NC from peter tan in Honkers.

Cost is $490HK for webcam & aluminium nose piece & $390 for a baader 1.25" UV/IR filter. All up $880HK ~ $125 Aust...+ postage...around $10 Aust.

IMHO Go for it.
