It appears as though you're trying to use the rule of thirds, but may be erring on the border side of the third points, rather than towards the middle. Take #1 above - the sky appears to be a thin sliver along the top, slightly less than 1/3.

See the giraffe pic. Don't get too caught up in actual dimensions, or things being exactly equal thirds. I think just around third points, but slightly towards the middle.
