Stellarium

Hi there guys. I was just wondering if stellarium is missing objects. I have a list ive downloaded of things to locate in the southern hemisphere but when i go to search some of them in stellarium, it finds the spot, but shows nothing at all where it is pointing. Its only with some objects and not others. just wondering if its a bug?

cheers

This question is discussed in some of the other Stellarium threads on this forum.

If you mean photos of objects. Stellarium shows photos of various celestial objects superimposed on the star database if there is a suitable photo in the textures or nebulae folder. There is a practical limit of about 200 such photos before the average computer runs out of processing power.

In a future release of stellarium the DSS photos of the sky will be downloaded as necessary to give photos of all objects.

Hi Roobi
I have found that some objects are too distant (at the current view) to be seen, but zooming in on it *may* bring it into view.
Cheers

Also remember you must download object catalogues for Stellarium to add to the default one

Must is a bit over the top. I have all the star catalogs and they add up to 1,287,783,926 bytes. Windows won't load them all at once unless you are running 64 bit. If you only want stars brighter than mag 10.5 they come with it.

Barry, the Geocities link for your images on the Stellarium wiki is dead. Can you point it somewhere else?

Hi Andrew

When geocities closed I lost my little web sites. I will get another sometime but I haven't got a round tuit yet. Anyone wanting the extra textures will need to email me and I will send them.

Stellarium 0.10.3 will be released Tomorrow 30/1/2010

It is a great improvement on 0.10.2
Many extra features are included.

Runs OK with XP Pro on a T400. Will have to see how it goes on the T40 I cart around with me.

First observations:
Didn't create a desktop shortcut.
Doesn't have the builtin icon like 0.10.2 did.
Can't reorder Oculars from the config tool, and since they are in an sqlite DB can't reorder them by editing a text file.

Sorry to say that, but Stellarium becomes worse with every new release!

0.10.2 had big problems with the graphics (which required to get the latest graphics drivers), and the new 0.10.3 has another serious problem:
It only updates the screen (i.e. using realtime) while I'm moving the mouse - when the mouse doesn't move Stellarium stops any updating.
And while moving the mouse the screen is also flickering.

I guess I'll have to stay with 0.10.2 ...

Did you remove the old config .ini and install a clean copy. do not install over the older version. The old config.ini does not work on some computers
The flickering screen sounds like lack of OpenGl. The old config .ini has some conflicting entries that may cause this.

You did not say what kind of computer and video.

Hi Andrew

I don't think it ever created a desktop short cut and Icon automatically. You need to do that manually and use the icon in the data folder.

The new ocular module is quite different than the old one. I would have rather seen the text editable inventory. However the designer builds on a Mac and likes the sqlite data base system which is far more versatile so that is what we have now.

What is missing is a complete editing instruction. The hot keys are listed in the help file and you edit the file on screen Alt o, (tabs) changes windows. Re-ordering the telescopes involves deleting all and re-entering in the order you want. You can then add all your eyepieces. It works well once you get used to the new system and set it to you own configuration.

Ok, here a few more infos:
about 1 year old notebook, Intel Core2Duo P-7350, ATI Mobility Radeon HD-3470 with latest drivers, WinXP-SP3

I made a new Stellarium 0.10.3 install after a complete system restore, so no traces of any older installation.

And a bit more details about the flickering: it's not the whole screen which flickers, but only the left&bottom toolbars!
When I start Stellarium sometimes it works (sometimes not) until I move the mouse - then this toolbar region flickers and the clock is updating for 1-2 seconds and then it simply stops. Then I have to move the mouse again and it starts again: running a few seconds and everything is stopping again - absolutely crazy.

We are having massive troubles as well, I starting to thing that 10.3 might not be fully implemented yet, one thing that has lead me to this idea is that 10.3 is not displayed on the main site yet combined with the fact that major bug reports that are yet to be addressed.

Cheers and good luck,

Trent

Hi

Sounds like there is still trouble with radeon video. I though we had got around that. None of the developers run radeon video so problems don't show up. I have six different platforms here but I only have SiS, Nvidia and intel displays and there are no problems noticed on these (yet).

Place a bug report in the reporting area with all the details.

Hi Barry just thought you could use some positive feedback as well. I just uninstalled 10.2 and installed 10.3 it even kept my location details and started in less than 5 seconds it used to take upto 30 seconds to start with 10.2 very happy so far and I think you provide a brilliant and free resource to us. I have included details of my system in the hope that it assists with development and planning and showing what specs are good for your software.

Hi warren
You should have no trouble with that. Nvidia have good support for openGl and linux, where the developers build.

Yes my installation starts instantly after the first run and is almost twice as fast as my previous builds.

We have a new method of compiling the project now using Qt creator. It took me a couple of hours to get it to work. I hade a : where there should have been a ;. Took me hours to find it. But it is a great system and builds a faster version.
