Celestron 5SE + Canon 50D

Hello All
not a regular and fairly newish, looking for scope #2

I have a Cannon 50D. They are a bit on the heavy side but there again they arent your $350 point and shoot party shots digital either.

I can get my hands on a Celestron Nexstar 5SE or 6SE fairly cheaply compared to earlier in the year. they must be running them out.

Id like to start some simple and basic astrophotography. Nothing tooo fancy just yet but potentially so soonish. Im a not unfamiliar with photography and im a fairly average astronomer .

Would it be possible to take average pics with the 50D, not the "oooh ...aaaaaarrrr " pics I see on here but something non astronomers will look at and say "that aint half bad for a short fat bald old ugly bloke"

Do these scopes come with the capacity to carry the 50D and are the motors any good for a couple of minute exposures, say 3-5 not 60-90 min which might be scope #3

I did take something like this at Arkaroola in July with just the cheapy tripod we bought for the Canon, unprepared and all that jazz

If this isnt a workable combination, could someone recommend a scope arrangement that a 50D would work nicely with and should I just by the 5SE/6SE and be done with it, as a easy to use holiday scope for when we travel (caravan, camper or camping and the Land Rover) which is a fair bit fortunately.

many thanks
Mat

Hi Matt

Unfortunately the SE mounts are Alt/Az and so not suitable for astrophotography even at the 3-5min mark. Best is maybe 30seconds before stars start trailing. If you have the money one will be very good for travel and holidays though.

it can be a good scope for photography, you just need to guide it and put it on a polar wedge, just depends on how well you want to go with it. but one thing that you wont do is get the it was alright for a bald old fat if you dont even get guiding going. so at the end of the da its upto you what you call a respectable shot my setup cost me 3.5k and its getting in my eyes reasonable shots
