Spider and Bee

First image with my new 100mm Canon macro lens. Ended up getting the new L lens with IS and it will take some time getting used to.

1000D f11 1/60 iso 400 natural lighting.

How do I make the image smaller for downloading? It is only 80kb but still downloads really large.

Looks like that bee is having a bad day.

Did you scale the image before you saved it? Rather than reducing the quality until you hit the desired size, scale the image until you can get at least 90% quality, preferably 95%, and fit under the size limit.

Even then, some images will still be acceptable at lower quality than others.

Andrew,

I am not sure how to scale the image. I thought that when you dropped the size the scale dropped as well.

Two things interact. The image size in pixels, and the resolution. Software could take the resolution into account when displaying, but probably doesn't.

Your image is 2000x1334. At 72dpi (the old "standard" for displays) it would be 705mm by 470mm. At 600dpi (moderate quality on lasers and inkjets) it is 84mm by 56mm.

The exif data in your jpg says 100dpi,so it should appear 508mm by 338mm, but I doubt IE/Firefox is that smart.

For the thumbnail you'd probably do better to reduce the image to 1000x667, or even 500x333. The compression artifacts are less noticable at that size. Then supply a link to the full size image for people who want to see it.

Pretty sharp Frank, but there's noise there and I'm not sure why. At ISO 400 noise should be clean as with the 1000D. Was this underexposed and then pushed in RAW processing by chance? Good effort though - a Crab spider with a Bee kill. And flies on the Bee to boot. Very well done.
