Universal horror collection (DVD)

Hi guys,

I'm not sure if anyone else enjoys the classics or not, but Universal horror has recently released a bunch of classics on DVD, titles available are:

Dracula
Frankenstein
The mummy
Werewolf of London
Bride of Frankenstein
The wolf man
Frankenstein meets the wolf man
Phantom of the opera
House of Frankenstein
Creature from the Black lagoon

I have 5 of the 10 DVDs, will pick the other 5 up on Thursday night. I've only seen them being available at JB Hi Fi. Bonus is that they're only $13 each! Bargain if you ask me!!!!

The quality is as good as can be expected. Remember these are 70 or so year old films and the original negatives have either been lost, or not very well kept. 4:3 aspect ratio (widescreen didn't exist back then obviously). Sound is as good as can be expected.

I've been happy with the quality, although some may prefer better image quality. Sadly, you can only do that if the negatives are of exceptional quality, and that's not very likely imho.

A quick check reveales that the " Invisible Man " is missing from that list.

I better check out J&B Hi Fi for some of these before they go.

Well done thx for letting us know.

Geoffro.

No problem Geoff! Sometimes the classics are the best! Apparently, the Invisible man is available on region 1 in the US, but like most things, us Aussies get screwed big time.

le cinque elemente? That's one awesome movie. The visuals are first rate, the set design is damn cool, it's funny, the acting is quirky. It's one of my favourite sci fi movies. I like it that much that I bought it years ago when it was first released on DVD, and then bought the special edition version around Six months ago. A very underrated film. Oh, and the directing is tight, and pretty good cinematography to boot.

I also like Jean Moebius' designs.

That said, I'm a large Hans Rudi Geiger fan too.

Big universal classic horror fan too. I got mine (for Ireland) from amazon.co.uk (dont know if ye have an equiv) and yes they do have Claude Raines Invisible Man.

theres also out there a box set of the Universal Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movies. All of them digitally remastered with top sound and image quality.

Here's a TIP, if your into older Movies that appear to be lacking in quality, Hook up a DVD player to a Large 68 CRT telly & watch them as they were meant to be. ANY CRT for that matter-The picture looks a lot better and aspect ratio not a problem. I watch Mcgyver and a few other Old 70' & 80's show that way-Particularly useful for those cheap $2.00 DVDs & Old Docos.
I've got a Top Notch fully fledged Home theater with all the latest tech, but nothing beats watching the old stuff of a CRT through a descent 2 channel stereo system. Just go search your local Land Fill & set up a little area for watching your old favorites, that you can't get wide screen or simply look crap on you 50" LCD.

Dave - I do all of my "viewing" from the computer's monitor - 24" widescreen. My DVD software crops the 4:3 views down nice enough for my eyes, no need for a larger CRT. My computer sound setup is 2.1 (2 speakers + sub), good enough for most purposes.

I'm not really into home theatre, but I am *into* high quality hi fi gear. I have around 30k worth of hi fi ;-) My speakers alone are probably worth more than your entire home theatre set up ;-)

Depends on what you value. hi fi stands for high fidelity, something which most home theatre sadly lacks (sorry if I'm sounding elitist, but high quality home theatre is VERY costly). I'm a 2 channel guy, and an analogue (not digital) guy at heart. My turntable and cassette deck will sound pretty close to most people's CD players from my experience. That's before I drag the DAC/transport combo out ;-)

i tend to only watch Blurays, or high quality MKV's, i use an Auzentech HTPC sound card that encodes all sources, PCM and digital, into DTS, even from a 2.0 source. That just runs through a sony amp, and then out.

I dont watch many DVD's, but when i do, i use FFDSHOW to upscale on the fly, to 1080p. the results can be exceptional.

Blue ray is better, no doubt about it, I'm just not fussy enough with video to want it. There's no way I'm buying my entire DVD collection (or most of it) again in the Blue ray format...the movie companies make enough of a killing without it...

let's see...

8 track ==> compact cassette ==> dcc (digital compact cassette) ==> DAT (digital audio tape)

LPs ==> LPs (the only difference is higher quality LPs use virgin vinyl, heavier pressings and half speed mastering)

CD ==> SACD ==> DVD-A

VHS ==> BETAMAX ==> DVD ==> Blue-ray

Notice which format hasn't changed much? And still sounds great?

gee this thread has morphed lol...

I put it on par with "Hey Dude, Wheres my car?".........and a string of other dud trashy movies i was unfortunate enough to view.....

Looking at the "2012" movie clips on TV i could only stand 10 nanoseconds of it as the balls of "solar flares" hitting the ground and exploding made me nearly cry ........what Roy and HG call a DOGS BREAKFAST.......
I don't think i'll waste my time seeing this one.....

:insert emoticon shooting ones self:
