Reversing your lens.

Woweewoweewoweee.....

I just discovered something you can do for a bit of fun if you don't have a dedicated macro lens. It's called reverse lens I think.

You take your lens off, flip it over and hold it in front of the camera body.

I took a few pics of each end of the focal distance and focal range. Here's some comparison shots that show how close you can get. (I don't know why I have a singapore 50 cent piece, but whatever...)

None of these shots are cropped.

Baz.

In order,
55mm right way
55mm reversed
18mm right way
18mm reversed

Oh my gosh David, is it serious? How bad will it get? How long have I got? Can you prescribe anything for it? Will I get a rash?

Great shots!!

Be careful mate. You should not really take shots, without a lens connected. The camera generates electro magnetism and can draw free floating dust particles onto your sensor.

You don't have a spare lens? It is much better to have a 50mm attached, then reverse another 50mm in front of it. Then you can tape the lens together.

Man! The depth of field is SOOOO short!

Here's an earwig I am happy with for a first, and although the ant is very OOF, some bits of him are really sharp and detailed! Look how much it goes OOF in the 2.5mm length of his leg!

Neither of these are cropped!

you know kyuo have to go and buy a dedicated macro lens now baz

i started with a reversed lens too. if you can its good to close the aperture up a bit for more dof... say f8-10. yeah it still works even tho the lens is reversed.

from memory you can get adaptors that have a filter thread on one side and a lens mount on the other allowing you to reverse mount lenses.

Novoflex does one for canon eos:

There are also filter-filter adapters for mounting two nifty50's objective-objective.

Uh-oh - he's off with the fairies already...

I'd suggest you keep at the 50mm end rather than the 18. You'll get more control that way. It's pretty common for guys to use an adapter or even tape a 50mm prime lens reversed to the end of a longer lens. Maybe I shouldn't be showing you these, but...

You get the idea. Personally, just get yourself a true macro lens and be done with it I know you're having fun.

These are the sort of reversing ring you need I think. Just need to make sure the thread matches the lenses you want to connect:

There's no hope. No cure. You can try and vaccinate yourself and get a dedicated macro lens, but it'll probably add to the problems. There could be rashes, cuts, bruises, stiffness and sore muscles and possibly late nights too.

That's the Canon MT-24EX Twin Light, but he's put it on some other bracket extensions.
