Jupiter Oct 25th RGB and IR

Hi All,

Imaged Jup Oct 25th. It was crystal clear but the wind was very strong. This was the first night I have ever felt the need to lock down my dome following each time it had to be rotated.

The seeing was not good, about 5 to maybe 5 1/2 /10.

I am a bit surprised the images came out as good as they did, considering the conditions.

I have posted 3 RGB images and 2 IR images. Io and its shadow were in transit when I commenced this hour long capture session.

The red spot in the NNTeZ that merged with the white spot back in Sept is interesting in so much as it seems very bright in IR. I have marked the red spot in one of the RGB images. It is clearly visible as a bright spot in both IR images.

As I have only just acquired my IR filter I am unsure if the red spot was bright in IR previous to the merger or is bright due to the merger.

The SEB has virtually disappeared in the IR image as the activity within it has more or less ceased.

Thanks for looking.
Regards
Trevor

Hi Trevor, they are very good detailed images, especially with the conditions you have explained.

10 out of 10 for dedication.

Thanks Lester,
Its been 10 days, the day we came back from holidays, since I have had good seeing. Thats unusual for out here, usually the high pressure systems seem to track over Broken Hill but this last week or so we have been dominated by more unstable low pressure systems.

Sounds like South West WA. Normally fine, warm in the day. Then perfect for the night. But the last week the clouds come over at twilight and thats it, nothing but cloud.

Global warming?

P.S. What equipment are you using? The shots look great. Cant wait for a good seeing night to come by.

Nice work Trevor. I've forgotten what it's like to do any planetary imaging.

Thanks Benno, my images are captures with with a highly modified 16" Newt on a GEM that was designed and built by me. It has a JMI moto focus, Peltier cooler and Anssen Technologies dual axis drive & drive corrector. I use a DMK 21AU04.AS CCD, Orion manual filter wheel, Astronomik type II RGB filters, Astronomik IR Planet Pro 807 filter and a Televue 3x Barlow.

I have attached 2 images to this reply taken in good to very good seeing, one of them has been resampled 150% but the original was of high enough resolution that it still looks good.

Thanks Mike, these are pretty ordinary but they still have detail that is measurable. I have been spoiled this year with a run of good seeing, I think conditions such as those for this session really makes me appreciate the periods of good seeing even more.
