Selleys All Clear silicone for attaching secondary.

Hi all, I just wanted a quick sanity check before I use this to attach my 6" secondary. It's a neutral cure silicon sealant.

Would this be OK to use? As it's aussie made I thought someone here may have used it (or not) with success.

Thanks,
Jason

Looks like I used a basic clear silicon. Worked well.

Used it on my 2" secondary (after the first one detached during one accident couple of years back and fell onto main mirror) and it worked well, this time it is fixed for good.
Of course, I can not remove it any more... not that I would want to, though..
Just be sure to check it first.. One of the containers would not cure even after a couple of days so I had to throw it away and get a new one (that one was OK).

Not sure about Selleys all clear, I use all types silicones and polyurethanes in my work but many years ago I once opened a Selleys all clear and it was like sap from a tree so i'm not to familiar with it, but which ever type you do use make sure it is a neutral cure silicone for a mirror and NOT an acidic type.

Cheers Daniel.

I agree with Neutral cure as well, the acidic type which is easily smelt can be corrosive to aluminium.

Harry,
ask the ATM guru who lives not too far from me. He uses them at work, and would be the sort of knowledge base you need.

Hello Jason,

Selleys All Clear is a copolymer adhesive and not a silicone.

http://www.selleys.com.au/Selleys-Al...r/default.aspx

The good side - it's neutral cure so works OK with metals including aluminium.

The bad side - it affects polycarbonates (lexan) and polystyrene (styrofoam).

It skins very quickly (I've used it for other purposes) so you need to work fairly fast. Mask off areas you don't want contact, as wiping it off is not possible.

It takes a long time to fully cure if it's over about 7mm thick. It may take forever if it's thick and cold.

Regards,
Tony Barry

Thanks Tony, I did the deed today using it..

I put on three dabs about 10-12mm across and pushed the glass down using washers as spacers to keep it about 1.2mm above the secondary cell. The blobs went out to about 25-30mm across.

It says it could take a few days to fully cure so I will leave it until the weekend.

Thanks,
Jason

I found the Bostik Auto Silicone (Black in colour) has worked very well, to remount my sec mirror back in to it's holder.
I also used it to mount the sec heater on to the mirror.
It's ammonia free, which is a bonus.
Two years later, and everything is as solid as ever.
