Lovely wrens but I adore the firetails.
Great set of sharp, crisp shots. Extremely jealous of your new site, its really producing the goods.

Very good birding shots, good stuff. Liking your new site as well. One thing though:

http://dwhall.redbubble.com/sets/530...-flower-spider

isn't a flower spider. Araenidae, modern spider, probably arnaemorph of some sort. I could probably ID it for you if you want since I have pretty much every major book on Australian spiders and insects from the past 60 years

Hi Dave

A beautiful set of photos – they look gorgeous! The colours in the Wren are just fabulous; I hadn’t noticed the russet red on the shoulder before.

The low level shot of the Finches in their habitat is very nice too; the shallow DOF frames them just nicely.

Cheers

Dennis

thats because its a variegated fairy-wren Dennis, not the much more common (in s/e corner of oz) superb fairy-wren I am still to clearly identify one myself! even though they are supposed to be very common!!?? the superbs dominate everywhere i go.. and it gets extra confusing when the male superbs are in in all those weird transition morphs from breeding to non-breeding colours half the time!

and according to one distribution map i have (simpson and day) they arent supposed to be in your corner of the world Dave! awesome! lol

they are amazing crisp and colourful images! you're the man ving!

firetails (red-browed finch) are very common round here, usually in flocks in summer, after breeding, but dont sit still much for closer observation, and tend to like the shade (like a lot of birds) you really need the sun on them/right light to see those brilliant reds well, they can look quite plain without illumination,

Ahhh, thanks Kearn that explains it, although in my view, all these gorgeous Wrens are simply “superb” in their own right!

Cheers

kearn, the variegateds are almost as common as the superbs in this neck of the woods.

the finches are called red-browed around here, but whats in a common name anyhow hey

Yup it's a crabbie. Nice looking female as well. Prolly could ID it for you when I get home if you want. Good shot.

Superb, mate; we get the red-browed finch in our breezeway during the summer storms.
