Jupiter with nice NEB turbulence

Hello everyone! I just joined the site and am excited to see such an amazing group of astronomers sharing thoughts and images.

I'm based in Wellington, New Zealand, which everyone knows for its windy weather. That means most of the time the seeing is pretty poor - whether it be from atmospheric turbulence or from telescope tube vibrations! However when it's still, the seeing CAN be very good.

We had such a night on September 21. There was a bit of wind around and the image of Jupiter was leaping all over the frame, so it's likely not the best resulting capture I can ever expect. I use a Skywatcher 12" Auto (alt-az tracking) Dobsonian, with Orion filter wheel/filters, Orion motor focuser, and a DMK21 USB camera. With a Shorty Plus barlow and a flip mirror in the path, I get an effective f/25 - not as long as I'd like really, but given the slop in tracking I'd find it hard to keep a larger image in the FOV.

I wanted to share the result of one of the AVI runs, which I think really shows the maelstrom happening in the NEB. I'm pretty happy about the detail captured given this is "just" a Dob and it was a bit windy.

Comments and suggestions are very welcome!

Jonathan

Jonathan.

Cracker shot for an entry mate. I'm not surprised you're happy with that one.

Welcome to IIS Jonathan,

Very nice first image to post here for your first post and great to have another amateur from across the ditch.

Yes there is a lot going on in the NEB, some really delicate structure.

Jonathon, I know it is hard to resist the processing power that is at our finger tips, in this day and age, but I think this image is slightly over cooked.

This is a very subjective topic, but have a look at the current images on this forum from Bird and Paul, these are among the best planetary imagers on the planet, to get an idea of how the top guy's process.

Don't get me wrong on this, you have presented a really nice image here, but it could probably be made better with less processing.

Regards
Trevor

Nice image and what looks like good data. Plenty of detail and the colour is very pleasing.

You could just ease back on the sharpening and let the fine detail show through a little more. Each to their own though and I am sure you are well pleased with this image.
