Its a video format Ron, usually arriving at you computer from the video capture device (eg ToUcam) with minimal or no compression (depends on camera settings or processing). Avies are often compressed into mpeg format for viewing on the internet. They are analogous to bmp as compared to jpegs only movies not stills

AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave and is currently the most common file format for storing audio/video data on the PC.
