Mars October 2nd, 2009 10:50 UT

Since cloudynights is still down, thought I might post this here. Mars images seem to be few and far between nowadays. Seeing was much better than the CSC indicated this morning. Normally I wouldn't have set up based on the weather maps, but as long as there aren't clouds and rain, I'll set up since I'm testing out a DBK AU camera. Ran into some problems with it this morning, which I hope to have corrected now, so needless to say this image was taken with the firewire version of the DBK. About 1000 frames stack out of 7000. Taken with my CPC 1100 and 3x barlow. All comments appreciated, good, bad and ugly.

Mars? What's that??

Your shot automatically gets an A+, just cause it's Mars...

Awesome shot! You have some great detail there..

Nope...no bad comments...just a well done...particularly since Mars isn't an easy target.

Vey good Joel with Jupiter in the spotlight Mars sure is pleasingly different.
Great Detail on the Martian surface.
Cheers Kev.

Wonderful work there Joel.
Shame about the onion ring, but you've got some beaut surface detail.
While I'll never get bored with all the Jupiter images, it is nice to have a change of planet now and again.
Thanks for posting.

Lovely image Joel. Looks like the dust storms are moving around on Mars. Another month or so and this should stop.

Thanks everyone. Jeanette, that was the only drawback to the image. A trade off because of the amount of processing I had to do in order to get a decent image. I typically don't like to process heavily, but with Mars at only 6 arcseconds, and seeing not being all that great, I did quite a bit of processing to that image.

Here is one 20 minutes later. The edge artifact isn't quite as distinct in this one, but still there.

Made a 3 frame animation from that session. Last frame shows Sytris Major coming into view. I messed with the color some to make the frames somewhat consistent. Notice the changes in the Northern Polar Hood over the course of 45 minutes.

Nice work Joel. I've wondered what you can get with Mars right now. Now I know! Thanks.

Mars...hmmmm, lump of rock before you get to the big gas bag. Rather camera shy too. People like (read=obsessively) taking images of the big gas bag, but I like lumps of rock too

Keep up the good work
