Lush, Turquoise and Flow

Hi all,

A scene made at tranquil Thunder Creek Falls, along the Haast Pass. I made this photograph as the late afternoon sunlight shone beautifully at right of frame.

In the large format print, individual droplets of splashing water can be made out above many of the rocks and stones.

Slightly higher resolution available here.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
1/50s f/4.0 at 58.0mm iso125

Comments, critique, etc., most welcome.

Regards,
Humayun

Awesome, as usual!!
You really get out and about. I must spend more time out, with just the camera.

Hmmm... that was in a drought by west coast standards...
Last time I was there we had 200mm the night before and that "creek" was about a metre over the rocks. The fall was indeed thunderous.

Nice lighting as usual Humayun. That 5D Mark II is working a treat.

Mitch,

Thanks! I look forward to going back to New Zealand, soon.

I might head up to the Snowy Mountains when it warms up a little more and hopefully get some great sunrise/sunsets there, soon.

Dave,

Thank you. I am so happy with the camera. The more I learn the equipment and the lenses I have, the more I'm getting out of it. Each wedding I do presents a unique opportunity to learn and I feel my results are getting better and better all the time. My clients are happy and I guess that's what counts.

David,

Thanks! The water is that colour due to the glacier melt. It's stunning.

Adam,

Thank you. Yep, the sound of the water was very dynamic. You could hear the big rushes as well as the faint trickles. Wonderful place.

As i'm 1/2 Kiwi I often, look forward to going back soon to NZ.

I was just having another closer look at your photo. May I ask, is that "effect" of depth and .... theres something else, my eyes won't focus correctly on the mid section of the image, especially the grasses / trees to the right of the water fall. Have you done some type of "blend" I guess that's not the right term really, to get that effect? I am not sure what it is but something really draws your eye into that frame, I really like the mid section, that's why I am asking. would love to try and mimic that effect.

I am guessing though it is probably more operator and equipment, for the effect, rather than editing.

Mitchell,

Oh, you lucky sod. Where abouts are you from? North or south island?

I haven't done much to this image, at all, actually. From memory, I applied one or two curves adjustments to bring out a bit of colour and brightness. The rest is what the camera captured.

Of course, shooting in diffused light (overcast days) or late afternoon also helps as light is warmest and softest at those times.

Regards,
Humayun
