The NGC-IC Project

Many will be familiar with the resources of this great website. Just in case some may not have come across it:
http://www.ngcicproject.org/
The object list generator, by constellation, is very handy. I have used it a lot.

This page has images and data for each NGC object. Truly excellent.

I came across the site when looking for info. on the Grus galaxies, and remembered that glenc had told me about it a while ago, and I had forgotten about it. The chaps who have taken the project on and updated it deserve the thanks of all visual observers. I am sure that the imagers would also find it useful.

It's beaut!

Hi All,

Yep the NGC/IC project is one of the most valuable resources on the whole interweb thingy. One of its best features for advanced observers is that it resolves so many (almost all) of the errors in the original catalogues -- all the double entries, the missing objects, the unknown objects, the mis-identified, the wrong positions etc etc that are still published in an unresolved form in most of the modern observing literature including virtually all planetarium software.

Harold Corwin's notes correcting the NGC are invaluable. Steve Gottlieb's notes on the visual appearance of things through various apertures are also very helpful to the observer. I'm lucky in that I've observed with Steve before and we've compared notes on a lot of things over the years. He is undoubtedly one of the great observers of our time. He happens to follow a similar system to my notes, so when I read his, I've got a very good idea of what he has seen.

Another valuable resource that has just come back up (after being hacked on another web-host) is the Planetary Nebulae Observers Home Page.

It is now at: http://www.blackskies.org/

and is an equally valuable resource for the PNe observer -- no matter how obscure you are almost certain to find an image or some notes on things. Best of all, the Neat Southern Planetaries essays by Andrew James are back and there too.

Well worth a look ...

Best,

Les D

A quick thank you for that link, Les. That's a great series of articles. He should publish it, it would make a great little handbook.

I also agree that Steve's notes on those NGC objects are very helpful, but so are yours Les!

Cheers!

And ...

Hi All,

As some of you might know, the NGC/IC project was off-line for a few months earlier this year. If for some reason it happens to go on the blink again, you can still get Steve Gottlieb's NGC notes here:

http://www.astronomy-mall.com/Advent.../steve.ngc.htm

Steve & Ray Cash's deep sky fanatics/tragics web site (Adventures in Deep Space) has a heap of fun/obscure/impossible projects:

http://www.astronomy-mall.com/Advent...ace/index.html

and much more stuff here from Andrew James:

http://www.geocities.com/ariane1au/index.htm

Plenty of low-fat, high protein stuff there ...

Best,

Les D

Ta Les.

Recommend Andrew James' site at;
http://homepage.mac.com/andjames/index.htm

This is more update, on account that apparently Geocities locked out his passwords and wouldn't let him modifying the site. Worst Geocities is closing on 23rd October 2009 - vaporising everything for evermore.
