Lightning in the Otways

I had planned to photograph some of the waterfalls around the Otway area today but the weather turned nasty and ruined my plans.

I was rewarded with a great light show, that went for at least 2-2.5 hours+

I had a ball and loved all the strikes against the backdrop of the southern ocean which made it even more awsome.

The missus thought it was great, but i think in the end she was bored, i'm still on a rush

Here is a few pics from tonight.....

Thanks for the nice comments.

I think it turned out better than my planned trip to the waterfalls, but they are still on my list of things to capture.

Houghy, yes that was a daytime pic, It was very hard to get anything longer than 2.5 second exposure without the image being washed out and over-exposed.

I think i need a Nuetral Density Filter to overcome this problem Could anyone suggest a solution?

The thing that was most annoying was the formation of a huge water spout right in the middle of a downpour, i tried to get a shot of it, but was not willing to water test the Canon and all i got was a frame full of rain drops

Here's a couple more from the session.

Nice shots. A neutral density filter will allow a longer exposure, but it won't help the lightning show up up better. If you have a long daytime exposure, you are seeing a lot of light other than the lightning. The longer the exposure, the lower the lightning/daylight ratio.
An analogy could be bandwidth vs signal to noise ratio in radio systems, except here you're talking about the time domain rather than frequency.

Don't let my supervisor know I posted here. My thesis was due on Friday. Must finish it
I've been a bit busy and I've been lurking rather than making silly comments here. I don't know too much when it comes to astronomy.
