Have you thought about getting your Amateur Radio Foundation Licence?
A bit of theory and s bit of practical work and a bit of Regulations and you are "on the air". The 2 meter band (144-148MHz) is a handy band and cheap as well I have just paid $119 for a 5W hand held new from a company in WA.

I'm not sure what you mean by "involved". I started using them as an alternate call out / comms / chat system for search and rescue and across all the emergency services, and we use them at work.
I'm not so involved with rescue any more but I run a UHF base station at home, + one in the truck and we have a few handhelds for when the girls go out horse riding in the forest, etc.
I don't have an AM or SSB though.
794ks is a bit far to chat over on UHF!

I have a full license for 43 years, the problem is that the amateurs are a bit anal,( there full of them selves) if you don't conform to there ideas you have a fight on your hands so CB are ordinary people

I am only referring to a local 2M repeater group no all amateurs, general amateurs are very good people

I do hope I'm in the "general amateur" group of operators. With cb radio so easy to get hold of, i have found it to be the opposite, in the years past, so many people would be swearing and making it so hard to have a chat. I do hope it has all changed now so you don't have those sort of problems. 80 or 40 meters no good for you???

A few years in the late 70s in Sydney when it was all the rage. A crazy time! The AM channels were stuffed full of all sorts

Calling many of the UHFers around Sydney anal would be a compliment for them. 415V through their rigs would vastly decrease the profanity and deliberate interference.

Unfortunately I have to agree. It's not too bad here, but when I travel east, as soon as I cross the divide, the Sydney traffic is so bad I just turn it off.
