Snake Valley Viewing Targets

So what are people hoping to view or photograph during the wonderful weekend of the star party?
As I will be scopeless, I am wondering what I might get to have a peek at through other people's equipment.
I will be bringing my bodgy 16x50 binos with me for a look at few brighter objects.

Gazz

Being in darker skies than what I normally get access to, ill be taking this advantage to view a few galaxies, the Fornax galaxy cluster should be looking very nice

gaz, from another thread for my eyepiece testing. You are most welcome to help test the ep's! The more comments the better.

---------------------------------------------------
Summary of objects to view and then rate eyepieces based upon a recent link to the pentax comparisons of xw & xl's

Moon (high contrast surface features)
Planets (bright object, low contrast surface features)
Double stars
Detailed nebulaes / galaxy
Diffuse nebulas / galaxy
Compact clusters
Open cluster.

So thinking of objects to suit over the nights of star camp

Moon: NA
Planets: Mars @ 1am
Double stars: Gamma2Delphini @ 9pm
Detailed nebulaes / galaxy: Orion @ 2am, Sculptor galaxy @ 11pm
Diffuse nebulas / galaxy: NGC2070 @ 12pm
Compact clusters: M2 @ 10pm
Open cluster: clusters around the keyhole @ 3am

& finish off with saturn at 4am!!!

This is a rough guide of things i could find that will hopefully give me a wide range of viewing objects and a long enough timeframe.

Any comments / suggestions would be great. Or any other objects that provide a better test???

thanks

I still get lost trying to find stuff up there Gazz, i think i will point the scope in the same direction as the one next to me and hope for the best. If i understood the night sky a bit better i would now what targets to view. It's gunna be lots of fun no matter what happens. Your most welcome to have a play around with my little scope. I think it will be the smallest one there

Gazz, My 12" Dobbie is available for your viewing pleasure! (as long as I get to use it too )
As Geoff has already mentioned, the 'Fornax Cluster' is spectacular!!!! It's a Galaxy Feast!

Well I'm after a few things I can't see from home.

One is the Burbidge chain of Galaxy's. Mite be beyond my scope but I like Galaxy cluster chains. There plenty of others I'm after. But I'm trying to stick to things I can't see from home.

I will look at the big stuff 253, 47tuc etc just to get the feel of a dark sky.

Lets hope its clear. Forcast so far is fineing up for the weekend.

Thanks Dave and peter and Ken
I would love to have a look through and at everything. I will see if they let me on the plane with my laser pointer. The more experienced astronomers can point you in the right direction on finding faint fuzzies. Louie (atlas) has shown me a ton of things to look for with his(laser pointer) and I have got into the swing of things quite quickly and can hunt the little nasties down quite quickly now. I am really looking forward to my trip. I even told the boss I was taking 3 days off work (hard to do when I get 11 weeks holiday every year) I got the nod of approval because of all the great work I have been doing lately. My dad always said hard work will pay of in the long run he he. Thank goodness he wasn't wrong.

What I will be looking at...

Since I live in the suburbs and the neighbours on the north have trees about three stories high, I will be looking at anything in the north! The neighbours at the back often leave their lights on all night, so anything in the east. My house stops most things in the west, so west as well. The neighbours on the other side have a few trees and it faces a footy oval with night practice, so everything in the south as well. So in summary, I will be looking at anything I can lay my hands on.

I have charged the batteries for the GoTo so I am ready for action. I will also have my PST if you want to catch some sun.
