is anyone else getting utterly annoyed with this hobby?
We havent had a decent clear spell in what seems like months. And anytime the sky is clear its "plagued" by a full moon.
Imagine how narked off i was to have a beautiful clear blue sky in Canberra all day, clear at dusk, and i setup only to find it thick with cloud, and raining 20 mins later.
In all honesty folks, i am at the end of my tether with this. Its no fun having a hobby that you have no control over, and are at the mercy of.
Someone up there, is playing a sick joke, and its not funny anymore

l thought it was obvious when we take up this hobby we are at the mercy of the weather, especially in this location.

Pft. Thats nothing. I'm into drag racing. Imagine towing a car 200Km to a meeting and then have it rain. Cost a fortune and wastes a whole day. And I'm limited to one day a fortnight and only for 3 months a year. I also spend a lot more than I did on astronomy to. But the times when I get to race makes up for it.

Schiaparelli confirmed the correlation of clear nights near first quarter and full moon, and cloudy nights around third quarter and new moon. It has been confirmed many times since.

Beautiful weather here at the moment not a cloud in the sky. Just setup the scope waiting for the moon and Jupiter and possible Neptune to come over the horizon so I can try out the new improve focuser.

LOL! I get ya Duncan! It's as frustrating as hell when all you want to do is get out there into some clear sky.
I'm right-royally stoofed because my second hobby is radio-controlled aerobatic flying - and the weather plays absolute havoc with that too!

No rain today just broken clouds floating by on a light wind was tossing up all day shall I or shouldn't I, thinking knowing an astonomers luck I'd spend an hour setting up and the clouds will come in thick and fast.
Well it's 6pm now and guess what I guessed right.

Duncan, I'm at Murrumbateman and I've set up anyway - just have to keep a close eye on the radar in case the damp stuff comes...

One word : Observatory!
Less time to set up, nice and warm, etc etc.
Problem is, still at the mercy of the weather.....
OK, so, now I will scuttle away......
Cheers

It is a sick joke isn't it? My other hobbies of Flight simming, drinking Vodka, and watching TV distract me somewhat from the perpetual Melbournecast skies, but still I am very angry. I haven't even seen Jupiter this season yet
Only real solution is setting up an observatory in the Pilbara. Funny how Australia's sunniest places are as far across the continent from Melbourne as possible.

Right on brother. You just need an understanding minister of war and finance. When the weathers up the creek I just gaze into the reef tank and that makes it all better.
