Perth Thunderstorm

Anyone get any decent lightning photo's tonight?
I didn't realise it was coming by the time it was almost over my head, probably a good thing tho.....

I grabbed the Canon and was about to jump in my car when something went BANG!! next to me, I stopped and looked around, a few seconds later something at the neighbours house went bang too.... hmmmmmm
Then about ten seconds later I heard a really loud bang a couple of houses down.. tin roof.
In a min or two it was a cacophony of hail.
Has only just ended.

Never seen hail this size in my life.... except on TV whenever Sydney gets hit by yet another cell!
Was exciting tho

Sorry about the quality of the pic, was in a rush to take the shot as it was melting fast in my hands and then on the bench.
The biggest stuff was probably as round as a 10c coin.

You were lucky, get a hit on the head with one of those and you would know about it.

Haha, I'm surprised I didn't get konked, was running around the backyard like a little kid trying to pick up the biggest ones!

Few thunder cracks over here, but didnt last long. no hail

More than anything Melbourne has got this year

The closest we've come to a thunderstorm is the usual omni-present slate-grey stratocrapulus tripe

Must have moved down the coast, last night thought the caravan was going to flip, was rocking most of the night with the wind and real heavy showers. Did'nt get the hail though. Pretty quiet here tonight so far, rain, but the wind has died off a lot.

Small hail. You should have seen the last few hail storms we've had - hail nearing the size of 50c pieces. We were also flooded back in December, 150mm of rainfall in like 2 hours (on top of constant rain all day). Mother nature is not happy.

So it looks like out week of nice weather in Victoria is coming to an end? Oh well, it is Winter after all.

(I hope it does rain cigarette lighters, that'll hurt

David, yeah small by your standards

Don't get a lot of hail over this way, and when we do it's usually pretty small 2 to 5mm dia stuff.
Only other time I've seen a hail 'storm' was when I was in high school, normal sized hail but seemed endless.... ended up looking like an inch of snow on the ground, all us kids were allowed to run out of class and play with it ofcourse.

Just had another hail shower, just 'normal' sub-pea sized stuff tho.

We had a reasonable amount of rain last night (about 30mm), but I didn't get woken up by hail or anything so am not sure if it hailed.

From 8:30pm until 11pm I was actually in my observatory with the roof off taking snaps of Neptune! I had my obs PC doing the work and the laptop beside me showing the radar image to keep an eye on things. The southern suburbs were being belted at the time, but perfectly clear where I was. Of course it eventually moved in, sometime after I went to bed at 11pm.

Nice size stones for Perth!

I'm used to having a lot of hail in Perth but only small stuff, almost like large snow. I'm glad we don't often get the big stuff

And yes, perhaps ironic that the first time I feel like being in my observatory and opening the roof in 3 months is when the city is hit by a storm

ahh well, next storm due in a couple of months maybe

Last night the thunder was so close that it almost broke the windows because they shook so much.

The first time I felt like going to bakers hill it bucketed down as well.

We very rarely get the Supercells that you guys sometimes get.
The size of the hail that a cell can support is dependant on the velocity of its updraft.
