Wet weather macros….

Hello,

Whilst the weather hasn’t been suited to astronomical pursuits, I have managed to duck out during the occasional drier spells to grab a few macros. It seems the rain slows insects down a wee bit, as I was able to grab a few shots and stack them for an improved depth of focus on a couple of the photos.

The passionate flies didn’t seem to mind as I sneaked up on them with the Canon MP-E65 lens mounted on my tripod.

Cheers

Dennis

That's amazing short of the fly's compound eye, Dennis!

The thought of hairs growing out of one's eyeball makes me cringe.
Great shots!

Thanks Rick, Jeanette & Peter. These were taken with the Canon MP-E65 and were tripod mounted to tame the crazy image scale.

Some of the insects were reasonably static, affording me the time to grab 3 or 4 shots for focus stacking, to increase the depth of focus.

Cheers

All it takes Mike, is good Canon glass, a steady hand and cooperative insects, along with lots of patience and a big Recycle Bin for the plethora of images that didn’t quite make the cut!

Cheers

Thank you Adam, David, Rowland and Ric, its nice to have a day time hobby for those cloudy nights!

Especially one that is just as equipment intensive as astronomy.

Cheers

Wow, absolutely beautiful shots Dennis.
No wonder the passionate flies didn't notice you, one of them has the other's foot planted right in the eye Actually pretty interesting, I would have thought their eyes were quite sensitive but maybe not?

Thanks Rolf – here is a full res crop of the “foot-on-eye” region and it looks like the other out of focus foot is similarly positioned. I’m glad that the human species managed to evolve out of that bad habit!

Cheers

Thanks Phil – I had previously managed to (just) resolve the hairs on the eyes of bees but this is my first fly hairy eyeball!

Cheers
