I have a 2.3m Sirius Dome - now how will i place this in the yard

Ok I have now acquired a 2.3m Sirius observatory but I have strict instructions – I need to landscape the existing gardens first, and need to hide the dome (well as much as you can hide a 2.8m high dome LOL). I like the idea of Marcus’s (marc4darkskies’s) platform setup, but how can you disguise and blend in the observatory in my backyard. Open for constructive suggestions and solutions the backyard is here

Top aquisition David. You lucky, lucky b-word.

I'm so jealous it isn't funny.

What about giving it a "Predator" camouflage scheme?

Seriously, all you can really do is plonk it in the best place you can for what it is intended - an observatory with the most advantageous views you can afford it. I'd resist the temptation to just stick it in a corner and put plants around it. The wife might disagree though....

Curved bit up, I think?

OK, I guess you start with a map of access to the sky over houses, neighbours, trees, particularly North/South horizons. How does that restrict you? Check if the neighbours are thinking of a pine plantation along the fence line??

Landscape the yard with big, round, white rocks! Best disguise ever!

They won't even notice the big one at the back opens up!

Is that a ministerial directive...

I wouldn't bother trying to hide it, the sirius dome is not unattractive, I suspect that trying to disguise it will draw just as much or more attention.

I think it would be best tp make a feature of it in the garden, some strategic planting of palms either side to make it somewhat Taj Mahalish.

ps. you are reducing the area of grass to be mowed! Beaudy!

Offer to paint it a different colour. Your wife gets to choose. How about a nice pale green?

Just put one of those "Tank water used for irrigation" stickers on it and your visitors will all bow to your enviro-friendliness.

Cheers,
Jason.

Green was my financial advisors suggestion. Then she said paint it like a swimming pool -but I think that was a hint for me. My nice, professional looking dome may be sometime off.

I am looking forward to the solution to this issue, and what techniques you employ on the misses.

Chris, i dont really want it up in the corner - the kids use the swingset and it is flat up there - good play area. I was thinking near where the stools are on the slope - and use Marcus's pad layout, maybe some more dwarf pines and woodchip, maybe even latticework with some flowers etc? LOL at the enviro water tank.

RB you have no chance mate - its all mine. Trade you the door stop for the dome LOL

Geoff still working on SWMBO - it is a never ending task

Hi David

This is what I did:

http://www.pbase.com/takman2/new_observatory&page=all

Put a garden bed around 3 side, good soil and wood chips and planted some Buxus, when it grows a bit bigger, will trim it off and have a nice green hedge.

Cheers

What about a trellis or series of them (with vines/creepers) creating a stepped access so there is no direct line of sight, plus some normal landscaping shrubs etc, what if you built up a flower bed there to change the levels a bit too

Add a pond in front so attention is drawn to the pond !
Plus a feature fountain. !!

might be some merit in that - a solar water fountain and stepped garden

I second Gary's comments.

If you find a garden gnome with a telescope you'll have to buy it too!
