Old Men and Sport when do you stop

I been playing a social game of soccer every Wednesday now for nearly 2 years with people from work and other Govt departments (having never played a team sport in my youth) which attracts up too 20 guys each Wednesday for an 1hrs game and I've been loving it.

Today I had my nose broken

this is the series of events

12:45 start soccer match
12:50 get fouled seriously OK take penalty shot
12:55 chasing another player down elbowed in nose by accident
12:57 shake head touch nose feel bone move and blood starts pouring

After retrieving clothes etc from change rooms and valuables from office ring wife tell her to get ready to take me too hospital catch taxi home $50 fare (I commute)

Wife rings daughters who are out shopping (they laugh)

Go to emergency at local hospital arrive 2:00pm eventually see doctor by 3:30pm

Looks at nose presses it (must be a sadist) checks nasal passages takes blood pressure 159/90 asks how I feel (it didn't hurt much until he pressed it) no x-ray no bandage referral to ENT specialist tells me to wash off dried blood says OK to pick nose and laughs then decides should give me a tetanus shot sends home with some antibiotics, time 4:30pm.

Now heres the question

a) do I give up sport because of my age or just grin and bear it and continue to enjoy playing

b) should I play in a social match this Saturday planned with some day release prisoners from a low security institution

Injury to knees would be another issue.

I turned 49 last week. The last time I pulled on the boots in anger was for North Narrabeen in the under 9's, however this season I joined the Bonnet Bay over 45B's team. That's a 40 year sabatical. A lot of rust to get out of the system but I love every minute of it. The body took a lot of recovering from my first couple of games but the last few have left me with very few aches & pains. Luckily no injuries as yet.
So in answer to your questions:-
(a) Can't tell you whether to give up because of your age as you have neglected to announce your age, however I would say no anyway. If you enjoy it and can contribute to the team then keep going.
(b) Yes you should play on Saturday as the prisoners will no doubt have leg irons on and this will increase your chances of winning.
Hope this helps.

Nah on both. Take up coaching, its is safer and much more rewarding.

My lovely English friend Shelly (Shell), that I've known twenty-five years or so, gave up the game to have her two boys, even though she was considerably skilled and proficient - always playing in the top women's grades. Now she trains and warms up for a different team than her sons, but practices with both of them in her spare time. She says it is the most rewarding thing she has done, and her boys play a higher grade than their real ages.
If fitness is the game, it might help you and other any other players too for your own Department! Good leadership development too... the boss might even give you a better review in the future or even recommend an earlier promotion for initiative!

Hope you ouch nose heals properly.

(Kissin' the wife might be a bit of a hazard for a few weeks, though! )

I would get a terrestrial prism for your scope, and watch the soccer through that.

Cheers

PS only the next match I mean ;-]

Have a short break while the nose heals, then go again!

Hi Trevor,

I'm allergic to pain. (Ooh, ow, %$^*&%*.)

Rest, heal, then make a decision.

I retired from sport in my early 40's, and team sports 10 years earlier.
Its a good experience to play team games. Keep at it. Injuries are just a small part of it. The good out weighs the small injuries.

Cheers Marty

Ouch. Seriously ouch. What on Earth was another "amateur" doing shoving their elbow in your face though? Do that in competition and get spotted by the ref and you'll get a Red card for your trouble.

I'd say keep playing if you love the sport. Age shouldn't make a difference to your decision imho.

As long as your enjoying your sport go for it Trevor, pain is temporary.

I been thinking of taking up Bocce lately, definitely looks more exciting than lawn bowls.

Cheers

What's wrong with lawn bowls?
Nothing like a game of Barefoot Bowls at the Toogoolawah Bowls Club. Gets a mite chilly in winter but that just means you need more
(Winners takes home a meat tray. )

Lawn bowls makes exciting television. Never seen a game where the score can change so dramatically on the last bowl! We had a Christmas Office party combined with bowls a few years ago. Great fun!

The injury you got has nothing to do with your age. It could happen anytime. I was 23 when I had a tooth knocked out at basketball training and only 17 when I had my check split open in a collision with a teammate in a game. (Yes, all my major injuries were caused by teammates.)

The 'funny' thing about the second injury was that it was me who had drilled into this younger (and taller) teammate the importance of keeping his elbow up when pivoting towards the ring to stop shorter players from stripping the ball from him. I knew what he was about to do and was trying to get good body position on him to stop him pivoting but was a bit slow on my feet that day.

Quite possibly the funniest moment I have ever seen while watching
lawn bowls on TV was seeing the sponsor signs in the background
being for a funeral company!

We played evening lawn bowls once years ago on a remote mining site.
Loaded with quite a bit of amber tranquiliser before and during the game,
we actually managed to start winning games after a few weeks,
much to the annoyance of the locals. Good times

Steve

Don't get me wrong guys, I just like the idea of lobbing the ball rather than rolling it.

It's got more to do with my Italian heritage and red wine.

Cheers
