Modified Canon DSLR's with Baader Filter (Expression Of Interest)
Hi Guys,
I will shortly have 2 x Modified Canon 20D's and 1 x Canon 350D (say within 2 weeks) for sale with the Baader ACF Filter (Same coatings as their UV/IR). Will be doing the modification myself. No firm ball park price figure as yet (will be relatively cheap) but just seeing if anyone is interested.
These will be my test camera's to test my skills at the modification process. Will be done in a clean dustfree room with test results. Maybe in the near future, will be helping fellow astrophotographers to mod their DSLR's if interested.
Attached is a graph which represents the noise level vs ISO settings comparison with other DSLR's. You can definitely see at ISO 800 and above, the Canon 20D wins hands down. Not even the 1D Mark II could keep up
Updated. I also have another Canon 350D modified if anyone is interested. Will be much cheaper than the 20D. Once i successfully modified these cameras and do multiple tests and checks and that im fully happy with the modification, i will list the prices.
Ball park figures:
350D modified with Baader ACF filter ($650-$750)
20D modified with Baader ACF filter ($750 - $850)
respectively, it might change.
Hi Gary, the autofocus doesn't require tweaking if the replacement filter has the same thickness as the original filter.
If anyone wants a 20D without the filter replacement, i can do that now rather than waiting for the filters to arrive. Please note, without a filter replacement, autofocus function for daytime use will not work but manual does. You will need an external 2" UV/IR filter as removing the original canon filter, the camera will be exposed to UV/IR light and images will turn out red.
This also will unleash the H-Alpha .
The 20D without filter will be $700 + postage. Comes with all the cables, battery, neckstrap charger, box, manuals etc etc. or, can wait a week until the filter arrives and i'll put that in but won't be that price. This is just an option if anyone is interested or wants a dedicated DSLR for astro work.
There is some scuff marks on the small lcd panel as seen in pic 1. Otherwise, the camera's overall condition is in good-excellent. First in best dress. If anything goes wrong, i'll refund your money back.
Reason for the cheap price is so that I can gain some trust in my modification first , once im "Hutech" or "EzyTech" LOL it will be alot more
ps. Last image is a test shot taken from the 20D of the IXUS900 camera which took the 20D with the trusty 28 - 105mm lense.
Hey Eric.
Very interested in a modded 20d. Im just shopping around for the best price on a skywatcher ed80 pro on a HEQ5 pro. Should only be a few days then i might be after the 20d.
Thanks for the great offer
no at this stage Clive. You've seen my new location, its pretty bad for the deepskystuff especially now that i have to carry my equipment further than my last place and with all the setting up involved. Did you see the 12 powerline cables crossing the roof? yepp thats right and that huge oval spot light? and that main rd light glow and and .. i don't think i'll ever have another "my best" shot at this new location.
Hi Doug, no dramas doing the job . 400/450/40d will be soon.

yep saw the location, youll have to go planetary for a while.... ill be watching your 40d situation, im PMing those using the q8 for updates to see how it goes , most are just working it out....... i know the 40d is a good performer and its tempting specially if it has the EZYtech mod done to it.
Hi Eric,
You must like a challenge, ived modifed three EOS300Ds and I cant say it was fun, im intrested in one of your EOS350Ds with no filter (filter replaced with non reflective glass only) save me doing another one if you have one ready, or near ready, please let me know how much (post to PC 4655).
If you do any mods. and leave out the glass (in lieu of the removed filter) focus will be a problem, not as such, but to ascertain focus in the viewfinder (different path) cant be done, also if used for Astrophotography you cannot use the viewfinder to focus, only DSLR-Focus will do the job, been there done that.
Watch the ribbon connector "lock-in" at the front, the brown one that is different than the others, its very easy to snap off the lugs on each side (break them) while removing the connector.
Getting the glass filter out is a work of Art, its the best Glue ive ever seen that holds it in and very hard to pick/cut it all out for filter removal, I guess you have read the article by "Garry Honis" on this operation.
