Mick, here's the repro I did on your original data.
Processing with Paint Shop Pro and CS3.

Ok, I went into curves and darkened it just a bit.

Nice work Jeanette,But I think It could be just a little bit darker, so as to bring out the dark nebulae better.
Just my opinion, no technical knowledge

thank you Jeanette. l asked Jeanette to do a rework for me as l was pleased with her effort of the same piece of sky.
l agree with Ron about the lightness of the image but l was not able to bring out any of the darker detail either.
maybe it's the way the subs were captured.
