Another autostitched shot

A bunch of us went bushwalking/rock climbing out at Evans Crown (which is near Tarana in the Central West) on Monday and took some photos. We tend to visit 'the crown' frequently during the warmer months as its a great spot for walking, climbing and taking photos, and it is only around 35mins or so out of Bathurst! I didnt manage to get any shots at all with my camera, because by the time we got up to the crown my camera had been broken somehow by the climb up (I dont know how as it was in a padded backpack and camera bag), so it looks like I am up for a new camera. The only physical damage I could see was a small crack on the bottom of it, but it isnt working at all, and the damn lens is stuck out and wont retract which is annoying). Just need to get some money together (whick takes away from getting the DSC's sorted).

The shot below is around a 290 degree panoramic shot taken from the base of the crown (which takes some climbing in itself, to get onto the crown requires ropes, or something really big... !) using my mates Fuiji Finepix 3000 3MP camera (which he is upgrading to a Finepix 9500 tomorrow). My mate got a great shot of a wallaby which was standing only about 10m or so from the path on the way down, which I might upload as well. It didnt seem

Resized and (poorly) cropped pic here. The original is 23724px wide (16 photos stitched) and is around 4MB compressed! Can upload if anyone is interested for what ever reason.

Great Shot! Wouldn't you love to take a telescope up there!

It's worth noting that the resized/cropped version is still 1.4Meg (for the dialup users).

I bet autostitch had a heartattack joining those large resolution photos

Thanks Ice, I forgot about the dialup user warning! You are right, Autostitch was giving the PC it was done on a real hard time. Even with 1GB of RAM it brought the machine to its knees. Trying to crop it in GIMP with an uncompressed JPG (20MB worth) took a while.

Ive thought long and hard about taking a scope up there (not the dob obviously!). It would be a real pain to get it up high enough to get above the tree line, but it would be well worth it if you did. The closest town from the reserve is Tarana which is about 10(?)kms away and is tiny (maybe 200 people?), and then the next closest after that is probably Bathurst at around 40km away. Ive never been up here at night, might be worth trying it one day (getting down again would be interesting though).

Speaking of clear skies, I was in Dubbo on Friday night last week and managed to drag some moderately drunk people out of town with me and my new 11x56 binoculars (at around 12am). Even being only 15kms or so out of Dubbo, and being slightly elevated above it meant some beautifally clear skies. The LMC and SMC looked like real clouds they were that bright and clear. I managed to check out 47tuc and the Orion neb (which was just rising), which were spectacular, before being dragged back into town. It has motivated me to get out of the Bathurst skyglow more often, even if its only with the binoculars!
