Celestron 70AZ

Hi all,

I am looking to purchase an entry level telescope for my entry level partner for his birthday tomorrow. I don't think he will do much more than have a good look through it, and probably thoroughly research it for a week or two, and then like everything else he 'gets into' will be over it in no time! So, in saying that (and with the possibility he may actually pursue this is as a full time hobbie) is purchasing the Celestron Astromaster 70AZ for $269 a good buy or a waste of money?

I'd really appreciate your honest and blunt advice! My next option is a computer game which I don't want to endorse!

that model is on sale at andrews Comms (see links section) for 129 - post would be about 30 i reckon..the 90mm model at 229 would show a lot more though... the 70mm would not show a great deal - at these prices maybe a good pair of 10x50 binoculars woudl be the way to go
