I made this image whilst trekking along the Arrow River.
I traipsed back and forth looking for a good spot to shoot other subjects, when I came upon this little clearing, under beautifully-filtered light, which made way for more shrubs, trees, and dead wood.
To my eye (and mind), there is an incredible depth to this image, which has been enhanced in a subtle fashion through post-processing (of which there wasn't much), but, I think it is mainly the bent tree, leading off into the clearing which creates the effect.
Let your eye wonder into each zone of the image; note the textures, shapes, and colours; then try to piece the whole scene together afterwards and imagine what I saw: the colours and texture tell the dreamy tale of autumn.
I love the autumn colours in this image, the various types of foliage add differing textures in different regions within the image. The bent over tree certainly is a feature of it, the dark horizontal lines of that particular tree create a real feature that compliments the more vertical lines that fade into the background.
I really like the effect and overall look, at first glance this scene seemed too crowded to me but after some time spent, really dissecting the components within it I think it looks just great, virgin bush, a place where, maybe no one has been before.
I really like, in the far central background the small patches of deep orange or possibly ochre red. Not sure if it is foliage or maybe the terrain, I think they act as highlights that lift the image.
Always great to read your in-depth comments on my work, and, this is no exception.
You're absolutely right about the fact that it seems like altogether too much is going on, but, hey, this is nature -- this is what is around us. I think it's a challenge to try and capture this type of chaos, as it were, in a meaningful way which can alarm as well as soothe.
I'm glad you found the red sprinkled in the background, which were the leaves of another tree. I had several versions of this image, with those leaves showing a bit more, a bit less, but, found this one to strike a balance. Thank you for looking!

Well done, as usual

Liz,
Why, thank you, kindly.

Very nice colours and as you say, plenty to look at. One comment or thought was that it looks a little flat contrast-wise maybe? I don't mean the image looks flat (far from it), but perhaps an S-curve or contrast boost might make it pop even a little more? Whatchya reckon?
Autumn is funny like that, it's just starting to get cold, but, the colours convey a sense of warmth. Interesting season. Cheers!

Troy,
I understand completely what you're saying, Troy. I was tempted to up the contrast in this shot but, after I had printed it, the printing process added slight contrast to the shadows in the image. Adding any more now will just make it unacceptably dark for print.

Gary,
Cheers, mate. I envy you for living in such a beautiful country! If I ever make it with my photography, I know where I'll be moving to.
I did see a couple of people looking for gold in the river. I thought it was rather odd, but, they must be there for a reason! Cheers.

Did you find any other gold nuggets while treking along the river
Aarrowtown is one of my favourite places and always will be. I love it there.
Cheers
