Rushing to Dusk

I made this image on the drive to Lake Tekapo. If I had left earlier in the day, then, I would have had time to get closer to the snow-capped peaks.

Not the greatest of compositions, as it was taken on the side of the road, behind a barbed wire fence. Private property, I suppose. But, I did want to share the colours.

Slightly higher resolution can be found here.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
10s f/16.0 at 17.0mm iso100

Comments and critique, welcome.

Regards,
Humayun

That's lovely on the eyes. I like the leaning barbed wire fence in the frame - subtle, but it adds.

Hi Humayun,

Lovely landscape, like the colours and agree with Eric regarding the old barb wire fence. It adds something and may have even looked better if you had given it more priority within the composition. If it were a new fence, standing erect, then I wouldn't have been attracted to it, however I think it lends a certain character to the scene.

Trevor

Nice I find the colour ring around the moon a bit distracting but that's the only thing.

We did a 14 day hike through the southern alps of NZ in 2005. Went hiking from Tekapo to Rex Simpson Hut on one day and up to a peak nearby the next day.. stunning. In fact the whole holiday was filled of stunning photo's. Be great to get back there, such a nice part of the world.

Wow!!! really love the colours in that shot. There really is something about being there in real time taking it all in with all the colours and light surrounding you

Great work

Phil,

Thanks, mate. The 5D Mark II is a dream to use. I'm quite happy to say that it's the greatest investment I've made. Along with the glass. The prints are just stunning. After all, prints are what it's all about -- there's nothing like hanging your work on a wall and letting others (and myself!) admire the scene.

Eric,

Unfortunately, in my haste to take the image, the horizon was about 3 degrees off being level. The un-rotated image actually had more of the fence dangling at the edge and it really worked. However, I had to fix the rotation and maintain the desired aspect ratio. This meant preserving the mountains at the far left swathed in the orange afterglow, so, had to chop a lot more of the fence out, which had already been cut due to the crop after rotation. I was going to clone it out, but, I can't bring myself to add or remove subjects and items from a scene. It's what I saw.

Trevor,

Refer to my reply to Eric, re: fence.

Roger,

I did notice the fringe around the Moon and it does show up in print. I will go back and fix it, for, as you said, it is distracting.

Lucky man. I want to do more hiking. Sound absolutely wonderful.

Gary,

You're right. As I was taking the images, I did take a step back and just admire the scene. There were more mountains to my right and they were alerady starting to go dark. There's something majestic about snow-covered mountains. They almost seem alive.

Petra,

Thank you for the kind comment! This was shot just on sunset, as per the title. It would have been around 6-ish, if I remember correctly.

Leon,

I'm fully aware that not every image I take will please everyone, and, that's actually a good thing -- makes me want to try harder next time. I will ask, however, what aspect of the image doesn't appeal to you? I would love critique and/or constructive criticism!
