Wow they're beautiful! I've seen them a few times at home here but not as crisp and clean as that.

Great capture!

Very unique looking cloud structure Chris,

Have never seen cloud structure like this before. Does this happen often in your region and what sort of weather is normally associated with them.

Regards
Trevor

mammatus clouds

They are rare (in this part of the word ). It is only the second time I have seen them in 20 Years.

How do they get the big cotton balls to stay up there?

Hi Chris,

Nice pic!

In response to comments about not seeing them here in OZ, I posted this thread regarding some I took over Quakers Hill NSW in 2005. Not quite the same thing, or as impressive as your shot, but similar I think from the shape and potentially the conditions at the time.

Cheers

Chris

Very cool picture. Looks like cotton balls. It's funny how the pattern repeats and they're similar in size. Clouds can look real funny sometimes. I remember about 15 years ago or so I was in the Pyrenees mountains between France and Spain just a bit above 3000m. Ambient temp was approx -25c. When the sun went down and started hitting the underside of the clouds something like this photo happened but it was more like spikes, like stalactites you see in caves caused by water dripping. So it looked like the clouds were "dripping down". Real weird but beautiful. These kind of pictures remain in your mind.

Mammatus clouds aren't all that rare ... seen 'em about three times in last year around NSW.

Attached shot was taken at Kandos on New Year's Eve 2008.

Somewhat enhanced in contrast to make them just a bit more dramatic!
