The Hubble Space Telescope team have just released some stunning new images of the quadruple transit, captured by the HST on the 24th February 2009.

What an astonishingly beautiful series of images! The details are quite breathtaking; it was well worth the wait. It’s certainly worth downloading the hi res versions – the detail is exquisite.

Amazing resolution indeed.

I read somewhere recently that with construction and operating costs out to 2010, the HST will be about $6 billion. Some might see that as a poor investment but the Hubble's contribution to astronomy and cosmology has been immense. I think the images that it produces for public consumption, like the Hubble Heritage series, has done just so much to lift the profile of astronomy at the grass roots level.

Strewth, how crisp is the F ring and what about Janus, absolutely stunning.

Not often am I stuck for words but on this occasion nothing that I come up with does justice to these images, especially the monochrome image of the ring structure, sensational.

Man, that is one of the best observational vids/images of transits I've seen. Jaw dropingly awesome!
Will have to re-read my A.F. O'D. Alexander book of the "Planet Saturn: A History of Observation, Theory and Discovery." (1962) (474 pages) on observational transits of Saturn. Most of these older observers could not image such things were possible, especially with the inordinate time spend sketch and drawing such event. Three or four drawing per night were considered an exhausting task.
