Looking for a good small scope for photography

Hi all,

I was looking to buy a short focal length scope for digital photography. I was thinking of making my own EQ mount not using the tripod design, but a nice low to the ground cylinder arm that rotates. Using a ridgid triangular design. I'm not keen on tripod EQ's with balances that can cause all kinds of errors. I need a good scope to design the mount for. I have a good metal work lathe and milling machine and plenty of electronics experience.

Has anyone else made their own mount ?. If so what type of design did you use.

For a scope I'd recommend the SW ProED 80.
www.andrewscom.com.au have them on special at the moment for $499.
For your mount, search this forum and the internet for designs for a Barn Door mount.

I bought mine while they were on sale.

I have a saxon ed80 that cost around the 400 mark from memory, the optics are great, its mounted atop a 10' meade lx200 but it gets more photographic use than the meade. Im no expert but Im very happy with it.

Get a second hand 80mm refractor for $300.00 or so. You always can use it as a guide scope later when you get a bigger rig. Don't cut corners with the mount. Get the best you can afford.

G'day Brett

I also have a lathe and mill but have not tried to make a mount as yet. I think the real sticking point will be cutting the worms accurately (unless you buy them). I have read a lot of material on how to do it but accuracy is the key. The rest I imagine would be fairly straight forward turning and milling operations. I would love to see it if you have a go.
