A domestic between feathered friends

A shot I took back in September last year while we were down at Esperance on holiday. It's only now that I've got around to putting it up on my website...

I think it is one of the best bird photographs I have taken - crisp right down to 100% view and captures the scene quite well I think. I was very happy with the result. The only improvement I can think of is some slight fill flash to hopefully catch the eye of the left hand one.

Hi Roger

This might not be what it appears to be? The Swallow on the right might be a juvenile begging for food from the parent Swallow on the left?

Typically, juveniles “beg” by spreading their wings and hunching their “shoulders”. This action seems to encourage the parent bird to open its beak and the juvenile then obtains regurgitated food by sticking their beak down the parent’s throat.

ahhh.. well, you sound a lot better trained than I about such things so I am sure you are right! .. perhaps I will have to update my webpage and this thread tomorrow

I’m no expert – I’ve just seen this begging behaviour with families of crested pigeons and noisy miners in our back garden. It’s only a possibility though – your pair might well be squabbling! Top shot by the way!

Nope.

He is carefully explaining that there is a shadow transit of Titan tonight (and their rarity). In response she exclaims -- "If you get that "$%*^&$%" telescope out again tonight I'm gonna ... and then I'm gonna ... and after that ... and if you think that you can then just crawl back into the nest freezing cold at 3am and ... "

Well, that's what happens at my house anyway ...

What a beautiful crisp image.

I rather think that the bird with its wing out is a male saying 'hey baby look at my beautiful wings..flap flap..sing sing....what do you think then?? Nudge nudge wink wink.", and that the bird on the right (left side of photo) is the female and she is saying "Ahh you cheeky thing, I've just popped out to get some grubs for my chicks and here you are at it again!!".

You can even see the grub they are fighting over on the piece of wood.

You're right.. it does look like there's a grub on the wood, I hadn't even noticed it before! Amazing
