Binoculars ..

I recently bought a pair of 10 x 50 Olympus Binocs as my old Zenith 12 x 50's seem to be out of alignment, hard to focus and just plain old.
Quite happy with the new bins, light, easy to use etc but after I got them I deceided to utilise the old Zeniths in some way. Tried to pull them apart and noticed that the right Objective tube was slightly skewed, a small gap where it met the main body. It was cross threaded !
Tried to undo with no success so sprayed a little CRC into the junction and left it for a week. A pair of polygrips later I managed to get them apart and reassembled them correctly threaded. Turns out that's all that was wrong with them !

Now aligned they are clear and excellent viewing albeit a wee bit heavier than the new bins. I picked these Zeniths up for $10 on TradeMe about a year ago to repair my previous pair of Zeniths which were also cross threaded but worn out as well so I guess the previous owner flicked them off because they were misaligned. The gap was minute and I only spottedit whenI was handling the bins and some light snuck in between.

Quite happy now. I reckon the old Z's with the 12 x 50 are actually a better option astronomically and I've added some light sheilds on the front lenses to cut exterior glare which also seems to help.

Just shows what a little careful maintenence can do

Brent, I saw the same thing with a pair of binoculars years ago - one barrel screwed on cross-threaded! Final factory check? No way!!
